On Friday, September 1, the Somerville Alibrandis captured their 8th consecutive YBL Championship with a dramatic come from behind game seven victory over the Brighton Braves at Saint Peter’s Field. Brian Tanguy (MVP) pitched the complete game for the Red Army, limiting the Braves to just two runs on four hits. Final score: Somerville Alibrandis 5, Brighton Braves 2.

The Youth-Police Walking Dialogues has come to a close this summer. Shout out to our Aldermen for joining our neighborhood walks in Wards 1-6 and for taking part in the conversation with the Somerville youths of The Center for Teen Empowerment, Inc. We also want to thank our community members for participating in dialogues involving issues and concerns. TE youths had the opportunity to listen to over 400 residents about community concerns and share their perspectives. To our TE Somerville youth, we hope you have a great school year and continue to be inspirations for police, youth & community unity.

I met Lois Fiore at the Brickbottom Artist Building on the outskirts of Union Square. Fiore is a diminutive woman, who sports large glasses, and has the appearance of a retired academic. In fact, Fiore did work for the Nieman Foundation at Harvard University, in the roles of assistant to the curator and assistant editor. Fiore wanted to talk about an exhibit she curated and participated in at the Brickbottom Gallery titled Peace: Cutting Through the Turmoil.

Jonathan T. Perry

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan announces that Jonathan T. Perry, 17 of Somerville has been located.  Perry was arrested on a warrant by Arlington police today without incident and will make a first appearance in Cambridge Juvenile Court.  It is unlikely that the arraignment will occur today.

Residents invited to join the Committee for a walking tour and community celebration on September 9

Somerville’s Community Preservation Act (CPA) is turning 5! To celebrate, the Somerville Community Preservation Committee is hosting a walking tour and community celebration on Saturday, September 9. All residents are invited to attend and partake in the day’s festivities.

On Monday, September 4, City offices will be closed in observance of Labor Day. Trash and recycling pickup will be on a one-day delay all week and there will be no street sweeping on Monday. Parking meters and residential permit parking won’t be enforced on Labor Day.

The connection between music therapy and dementia was recently spotlighted on Aging Well, a monthly production of Somerville Cable Access Television. Music & Memory Coordinator Rory Silvia (right) discussed the recently launched program with Mental Health Social Worker Cassie Cramer and show host, Nathan Lamb.

A new program that uses music to help dementia patients reconnect with the outside world was recently featured on Aging Well, a monthly public-access production of Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services (SCES).

The discussion was led by SCES Music & Memory coordinator Rory Silvia and Mental Health Social Worker Cassie Cramer.

Silvia described Music & Memory as a specialized form of music therapy, which uses tailored playlists to trigger memories and improve quality of life for people with dementia.
