Poet Amanda Peters writes: “I’m from Plainville, Connecticut and a second year student at Endicott college. I am studying biology with a focus in pre-med, with high hopes to become an OBGYN. Because of this, you can usually find me in the laboratory identifying cells under the microscope. Outside of school, I love to spend time with friends and family, including my maltese-terrier, Dusty Hank. I’ve enjoyed writing since a young age, and always felt comfort in writing either about personal emotions, thoughts, or feelings in ways that others can experience, relate to, question, or think about.”

Incumbent Joseph A. Curtatone prevailed over challenger Payton Corbett to remain mayor of Somerville.

The top vote-getters for Alderman At-Large are Mary Jo Rossetti, Stephanie A. Hirsch, William A. White Jr., and Will Mbah.

Angelor Julien, of 8 Wheatland Ave., Dorchester, November 3, 3:14 a.m., arrested at Noonan Pl. on warrant charges of operation of a motor vehicle with a suspended registration, operation of a motor vehicle with a suspended license, marked lanes violation, uninsured motor vehicle or trailer, unregistered motor vehicle, and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

Suspect arraigned in Somerville homicide

A memorial was set up at the edge of the Canal Lane parking lot where Kevin Raymond was shot and killed on October 14.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Somerville Chief of Police David Fallon have announced that Tony Harris, 28, of Everett, was arraigned today in Somerville District Court and charged with murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of ammunition without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building in connection with the October 14, 2017 shooting death of Kevin Raymond, 20, of Somerville.

Senate passes sweeping criminal justice reform bill

Senator Pat Jehlen (D-Somerville) recently joined her Senate colleagues in voting for a comprehensive criminal justice reform package that updates decades old criminal sentencing laws to improve outcomes of our criminal justice system. The bill, S. 2185, An Act Relative to Criminal Justice Reform, passed by a vote of 27-10.

Public hearings and comment period on Union Square development

Nov. 20, Nov. 30, and Beyond

The next round of public input on Union Square development will be a two-part public hearing at two Planning Board meetings on Nov. 20 and 30. After multiple years of public process to develop the Union Square Neighborhood Plan as well as Union Square Zoning, the community has set forth the parameters of Union Square development. In keeping with this guidance, this fall at two public meetings, the Master Developer, US2, presented their preliminary plans for the seven master development blocks and a new neighborhood park. Now their final proposed plan, the Union Square Coordinated Development Plan, is before the Planning Board, which will hold a two-part public hearing on the plan on Monday, Nov. 20, and Thursday, Nov. 30.

SHS teacher named Italian Teacher of the Year

Somerville High School World Language teacher, Gino Colantuono, was named the 2017 Italian Consulate and AATI (American Association of Teachers of Italian) Massachusetts Teacher of the Year by the Massachusetts Foreign Language Association (MaFLA) for excellence in promoting Italian language learning. Mr. Colantuono received his award at the 50th Annual MaFLA Conference on October 28, 2017.
