On November 11, the Prospect Hill Academy Boys Varsity soccer team won the Massachusetts Charter School Athletic Organization (MCSAO) Championship. It was a close game, with a 1-0 final score against Salem Academy Charter School. Congratulations to the players and coaches, as well as the families and fans who supported the team throughout their incredible season.

Longtime Ibbetson Street Press designer, and founder of the Wilderness House Press, Steve Glines, has won the Kathleen Spivack Generosity Award.
Kathleen Spivack has been a visiting professor of American Literature/Creative Writing (one semester annually) in France since 1990. She has held posts at the University of Paris VII-VIII, the University of Francoise Rabelais, Tours, the University of Versailles, and at the Ecole Superieure (Polytechnique). She was a Fulbright Senior Artist/Professor in Creative Writing in France (1993-95). Her poetry has been featured at festivals in France and in the U.S. She reads and performs in theatres, and she also works with composers. Her song cycles and longer pieces have been performed worldwide.

Christmas Tree Lighting, Menorah Lighting, Illuminations Tour in December
Join Mayor Curtatone and City staff for Somerville’s annual holiday celebrations, kicking off on Thursday, December 7, with the Christmas Tree Lighting and visit from Santa Claus, on the City Hall Concourse. Also part of the 2017 events are the Somerville Arts Council’s Illuminations Tour on December 16, and a ceremonial lighting of a Menorah on the City Hall Concourse on December 19, coinciding with the final night of Hannukah.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and State Senator Jamie Eldridge (D-Acton) announce a partnership with the American Institutes for Research (AIR) to launch a first-of-its-kind Middlesex County research study measuring the impact of opioid misuse. The data provided by public and private partners will examine system responses and readiness to apply evidence-based solutions to preventing and reducing opioid-related impacts.

A local community organization recently recognized two Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services (SCES) staffers for providing information and services that help older adults age in place.
The Cambridge-based organization Paine Senior Services recently honored former SCES Executive Director John O’Neill for his career in elder services and Caseworker Cassie Cramer for helping meet the mental health needs of older adults.
