I was raised by fundamentalist Christians. Between daily Bible readings and five-times-weekly church services, I had memorized large portions of the Scripture by the time I was in my teens. But what I read in the Bible seemed inconsistent with what I heard at church.

On Tuesday evening, November 14, members of the Somerville Kiwanis Club – with a lot of help from the students and staff from Somerville High School Culinary Arts Department – served turkey dinners with all the fixin’s to nearly one hundred senior residents at the Somerville High School Field House.

While my staff has provided many ways below for you to stay civically engaged with your city over the next few weeks, I want to encourage you get involved in your community this holiday season in other ways too. Support our students at this Saturday’s Somerville High School Holiday Craft Fair or attend a fundraiser for Puerto Rico at Flatbread in Davis Square. Perhaps you can make a charitable contribution to one of our many local nonprofit organizations or head out on Small Business Saturday and support our local economy. Whatever avenue you choose, I hope you embrace the spirit of giving this holiday season.

Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Boston and the United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley are teaming up to help needy families in the area enjoy a happy and healthy Thanksgiving holiday.

Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Boston is partnering with the United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley to distribute over 6,500 Thanksgiving meals, including turkey and the fixings, to families in need throughout Boston and the surrounding communities this month.

This Thursday (11/23) and Friday (11/24) City offices will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday.

There will be no street sweeping on Thursday, November 23. Trash collection normally scheduled for Thursday and Friday will be on a one-day delay.

Meters and resident permit parking will not be in effect Thursday and Friday.

The Green Line Extension project’s design and build team, GLX Constructors, was selected and approved over the course of the past week.

Last week the MBTA Green Line Extension project team conducted a “price opening” to select the design-build firm that will perform the design and construction for the Green Line Extension.

A total contract price offering of $1,082,118,600 by a Joint Venture of GLX Constructors won the day. All six additive options and MBTA contingency was included in the bid.

Developers Destroy Somerville Ward 4 Residents’ homes, ISD sitting on their hands

I say this without exaggeration: My home was seriously damaged by the developers at 400-406 Mystic Avenue, and I am not alone. We were forced out of our homes along with 2 other families, and other properties surrounding the construction site are also severely damaged. And Somerville Inspectional services won’t do a thing to protect us.

An order was put forward and approved at the latest regular meeting of the Somerville Board of Aldermen on November 9 asking that the Director of Capital Projects or the Director of Communications share with the Board their plan for keeping community members informed on a regular basis about the high school building project.
