Suffolk Construction has recently accepted Emily Sabatino and Jennifer Cremone as interns for the renovation of the new high school.

These two Somerville High School seniors from the Residential Carpentry program will be pursuing their career interests in Construction Management through this internship for the remainder of the year.

Compound that misery with the unfortunate realization that city or privately contracted snow plows have piled the stuff right back onto your freshly scraped clean sidewalk – it’s enough to send you right up the wall.

On December 8, 2017, Somerville attorney Philip Privitera was named an Honorary Lifetime brother of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall African Grand Lodge #459 at its 226th Annual Communication in Dorchester, Massachusetts.

Founded on July 3, 1776, the Most Worshipful African Grand Lodge #459 changed its name officially to the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge in 1847 out of respect for its founding father, abolitionist, and first Grand Master, Prince Hall.  There are now approximately 5,000 lodges and 47 Grand Lodges who trace their origins to the Prince Hall Grand Lodge, jurisdiction Massachusetts.

‘Affairs Run in the Family’ by Lee Varon

Lee Varon’s book, Affairs Run in the Family, is an exploration of and testament to the fragile feelings of the author’s memories of her Southern upbringing and relationship with her grandmother. When the husband of the grandfather’s mistress attempted to murder him, her grandmother’s life was forever changed. And then, there were also the events of the civil rights era, which played out during the author’s childhood and left a deep impression on her. Those complex feelings are explored as the author attempts to reconcile these events and their consequences to her grandparents, family, and herself. In Court, Varon describes her grandmother at the trial of her husband’s aggressor:

Keith is the author/coauthor of 30 book volumes and dozens of articles on the subject of radio and broadcast studies. In addition to his non-fiction titles, Keith has published over a dozen creative works, including an acclaimed memoir, The Next Better Place, a young adult novel, Life is Falling Sideways, and several short story collections; most recently Slow Train and Perspective Drifts Like a Log on a River. Mad Hat Press will publish his next story collection, Let Us Now Speak of Extinction. His fiction has been nominated for several awards, among them the Pen/O.Henry Award, the Pushcart Prize, the National Indie Excellence Award, and the International Book Award. He is professor emeritus at Boston College.

CPA community meeting, January 24

The Somerville Community Preservation Committee invites all interested community members to hear about the FY 2018 Community Preservation Act (CPA) historic resources and open space/recreational land project proposals before the Community Preservation Committee, and offer feedback on which deserve to receive funding, at two community meetings in January. The second will be held on Wednesday, January 24.  at 7 p.m., and will be held in the community room at the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) at 259 Lowell St. Parking is extremely limited at the VNA, so please make arrangements to walk, bike, or carpool if possible, or use street parking. Written comments on the applications will also be accepted through Thursday, February 22, 2018. The applications are available online at www.somervillema.gov/CPA2018.
