Join Weber Dance for the premiere of their new work: Her Sylvan Ascent
Please join us for the premiere of Jody Weber’s new work, Her Sylvan Ascent, on Thursday, June 14, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the Union Square Plaza (rain date: June 15).
Weber Dance has been immersed in this new project over the past two years and is excited to show it for the first time in Union Square. This piece was developed through the Arts Council’s Dancing in the Streets professional development program, and through a series of workshops to help choreographers hone their work led by New-York based dancer John Jasperse. It will be presented in Union Square as part of the ArtsUnion 2018 programming.

The Ryan Harrington Foundation hosted the Just One Run Fundraiser in Memory of Anthony D. Giurleo on Sunday, June 3. Proceeds from the race will directly impact the lives of those affected by the disease of addiction. Activities included the 5k adult race and walk and a children’s “Fun Run”. The winning runner in the men’s division was David Caggiano, of Peabody. The top women’s finisher was Leeallen Meyer, of Medford.

The 15th Annual Save Our Homes Walk will be held on Sunday, June 10. The 5K (3.1 mile) walk route begins at Somerville High School, passes affordable housing landmarks, and ends at Somerville High School. Registration begins at 1:30 p.m. The walk begins at 2:00 p.m. Back up transportation is provided for walkers needing assistance.

Somerville High School Graduation took place June 4 at 6:00 p.m. Due to the inclement weather it was held indoors at Tufts, Gantcher Sports Center. The ceremony was highlighted by performances by SHS Highlander Band, Chorus and Orchestra. Headmaster Sebastian LaGambina led the ceremony, the class and guests. Class President Leonora Koney led the salute to the flag. The SHS chorus and Mitch Allan and Jessi Alexander sang I’ll Always Remember You. Guest speakers included Mayor Joseph Curtatone, Superintendent Mary Skipper, and Ward 4 School Committee member Andre L. Green.

With a distinctive meal designed by chef Robson Lemos, the event will help finance the opening of Nibble Kitchen in Union Square’s Bow Market by the end of summer.

223 inspections and 99 health license applications in 2017: How do you know a pound is really a pound at the store and a gallon is really a gallon at the gas station? The Weights and Measures Division of the City’s Inspectional Services Department is responsible for enforcing the accuracy requirements and other standards relating to weighing and measuring devices used in the sale of food, fuels, and other products. The work they do is instrumental in protecting consumers whether they take a taxi, fill up their gas tank, or purchase items that need scanning at a grocery store.

Broadway (Ball Square) Bridge to close first, beginning Fall 2018 and lasting for one year. Detour routes and impacts under review by GLX team.
In anticipation of the planned release of the proposed schedule and detour plans associated with upcoming GLX construction and bridge closures, the City of Somerville has planned an information and Q&A Session on Saturday, June 23, from 9 to 11 a.m. As part of a regularly-scheduled Community Working Group meeting convened by MassDOT, the MBTA, and GLX Constructors, the proposal for closures of seven bridges between 2018 and 2020 will be discussed, among other items. Meeting minutes will be posted at www.greenlinextension.com/cwg.html following the June 5 meeting. On June 23, city and GLX staff will be available at an informational/Q&A table in front of Blue Cloud Gallery and True Grounds, 713-717 Broadway in Ball Square.
