Mayor Katjana Ballantyne and the Somerville LGBTQ+ Services invited all community members to honor LGBTQ+ Pride Month by joining the annual Pride flag raising ceremony on Tuesday, June 4, 2024. The ceremony, on the City Hall Concourse, included remarks from Mayor Ballantyne, City of Somerville LGBTQ+ Liaison Izzy Starr, and representatives from Somerville LGBTQ+ community.

Mayor Katjana Ballantyne and Somerville’s Public Space and Urban Forestry division (PSUF) invite the community to attend a virtual Pollinator Action Plan Advisory Committee meeting on Monday, June 10, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. The consultant team, Offshoots, Inc., will present the draft Pollinator Action Plan and invite feedback from the committee and members of the public. This presentation kicks off a summer event series aimed at promoting habitat and biodiversity in the city. Events include the release of the plan, a volunteer event to create a pollinator demonstration garden, arbor day festivities, and a “pollinator alle” at Somerville Art Council’s ArtBeat event.

Dave Ortega’s comic art illuminates his family’s history as immigrants from Mexico.

Mexican-American comic book writer and illustrator Dave Ortega narrates in Días de Consuelo his family’s experience during the Mexican Revolution. It recounts his grandmother’s childhood growing up in Mexico while the revolution was unfolding. He revisits the ongoing conversation the U.S. is having about the border and immigration. Ortega a native from El Paso, Texas is a Somerville transplant. While living in Somerville, he interviewed his grandmother for Días de Consuelo.

East Somerville Main Streets awarded $60,000 Cummings Grant

East Somerville Main Streets is one of 150 local nonprofits that will share in $30 million through Cummings Foundation’s major annual grants program. This Somerville-based organization was selected from a total of 715 applicants during a competitive review process. They will receive $60,000 over three years.

SomerStreets: Carnaval 2024

SomerStreets: Carnaval returned to East Somerville for its fourteenth year with free activities and entertainment on Sunday, June 2, 2024.  Then event included a parade, delicious food, family activities, over 30 vendors, live music, and performances from Esh Circus, Grooversity, Capoeira, Timba Messengers. SomerStreets is Somerville’s annual series of street festivals that close busy streets to cars and open them to the community. SomerStreets: Carnaval is hosted by the Somerville Arts Council and East Somerville Main Streets.

‘Safe Streets’ ordinance recommended by city councilors

The proposed Safe Streets ordinance would address the needs of non-drivers on Somerville city streets.

The Somerville City Council’s Legislative Matters Committee recommended that the Somerville City Council pass the Safe Streets ordinance, which would require that the needs of non-drivers are accounted for in street enhancement projects, and that Somerville would construct 29 miles of separated bike lanes by 2030.

State budget approved by the Senate

Senator Patricia Jehlen (D- Somerville) is happy to announce the Massachusetts Senate has unanimously approved a $57.999 billion budget for Fiscal Year 2025 (FY25). Following robust and spirited debate, the Senate adopted over 400 amendments, and took 43 roll call votes. A fire alarm Thursday night delayed the final vote till shortly after midnight on Friday.
