Our jobs require us to assume various roles–nurturer, parent, and coach–and achieve a myriad of goals–to inspire, teach technique and regulate students of varying emotional, social, and developmental levels.

Each year, the President of the United States recognizes volunteers throughout the country with the President’s Volunteer Service Awards (PVSA).  Somerville residents Alexandra Armstrong, Gabriel Begun and Xinyue Lu are among this year’s recipients.  They shared their professional “know-how” with middle school students in low-income communities during after school hours. The mentorship and support they provide is helping close the opportunity gap which exists between students in underserved communities and their peers from more affluent communities.

Market Basket meat snatcher nabbed

Police officers were dispatched to the Market Basket store on Somerville Ave. last Thursday evening on reports of an unwanted person.

Upon arrival, the officers spoke with the store manager, who stated he was in the process of watching a male, whom he had known as James McKenna, inside the store. McKenna was being watched because he was allegedly known to have shoplifted from the store in the past.

Somerville’s community kickball game

Members of many Somerville-based nonprofits as well as the general public joined in for a for a community kickball game on Monday, July 16, at Nunziato Soccer Field. The goal was to build a stronger relationship among all community organizations and to invite the community-at-large to come cheer us along while learning more about these wonderful community resources.

City acts to improve Union Square infrastructure

In 2014, during his inaugural address, Mayor Curatone promised to make Somerville “the most bikeable, walkable and transit-accessible community in the nation.” A recently approved action for the renovation of Union square, will make good on the mayor’s promises by improving sidewalks, constructing bike lanes, and implementing environmentally conscious “Green infrastructure.”
