Redbones’ 17th Annual Pig Roast on Chester street in Davis Square took place Monday, July 30, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Whole Hog with all the fixins, a beer garden and live music. Fun for the whole family. Proceeds go to the Somerville Homeless Coalition.

 

Somerville Girls Basketball Summer League

The Somerville Girls Basketball Summer League played Mystic Valley Monday night at Pope John XXIII High School in Everett. Somerville lost to Mystic Valley.

Wild time at the laundromat

On Sunday, July 29, police officers were notified that a larceny was in progress and an employee was being assaulted at True Blue Cleaners on Broadway.

Upon arrival, the officers reportedly observed 5 people inside, of which one was pointed out as the assailant by a witness to the incident.

Somerville Stands Together is celebrating the launch of talks between Somerville’s newly-elected Community Benefits Negotiation Committee and Union Square developers US2.  The committee consists of 15 residents,  elected by their neighbors, who will represent residents concerns in negotiations with real estate developers. This is an important victory for the working people of Somerville, who see a growing disconnect between City Hall and Somerville’s progressive values. Now, for the first time, Somerville residents will have a formal seat at the table to ensure that as the city continues to grow, Somerville is a city that works for all of us.

In advance of planned bridge closures as part of the Green Line Extension Project (GLX), City staff along with staff from the MBTA, MassDOT, and GLX Constructors, are hosting a series of events and meetings throughout the summer and fall to provide information and answer questions about construction, which is already underway. Paterna family celebrates 50th anniversary

On Saturday July 28, Salvatore (“Tori”) and Susanne Paterna celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Boston’s Seaport Hotel. Tori, now retired, formerly owned and operated John Solomon’s Inc. on Somerville Avenue in Somerville. Until retirement, Tori and Susanne lived on Bailey Road, in Somerville’s Ten Hills neighborhood. They recently moved to New Hampshire and keep a winter home in Florida. Happy 50th wedding anniversary Tori and Sue!

Bird scooters make an unexpected entrance

Update: Somerville City Solicitor Francis Wright Jr. put out a cease and desist letter saying the city will confiscate scooters starting Friday, August 3.  The letter asked Bird to remove the scooters within 48 hours of its receipt, otherwise the city would confiscate the scooters beginning August 3.

Electric scooters from the California based company Bird landed on the streets of Somerville for public usage on July 20. The city had not anticipated their arrival and was taken by surprise by their launch, issuing a statement that “there is no contract, license or agreement in place to allow them to operate in Somerville at this time.”
