Although timelines are subject to change, current plans for construction of the Green Line Extension (GLX) call for the full closure of the Broadway Bridge, just east of Ball Square, for one full year beginning in January 2019. While the bridge is closed, detours will be in place for cars, bikes, pedestrians, and MBTA bus routes 80 and 89.

Please join Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone, Ward 5 Alderman Mark Niedergang, Ward 6 Alderman Lance Davis, City of Somerville staff, and representatives from the GLX team for a community meeting on Monday, September 24, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. to discuss the upcoming bridge closure and detour routes. The meeting will be held at St. Clement Parish Hall, 71 Warner St., Medford, MA. (The Parish Hall is located directly to the right of the church, which is just over the Somerville line and a 4-minute walk from Ball Square.) This is the second in a series of community meetings. A meeting was previously held on August 29. While there may be some minor updates to present at the September 24 meeting, the same general information will be shared.

Warm temperatures blazing outside or not, fall is on the horizon,  and nothing signifies the impending return of autumn like the excitement surrounding the start of a new school year. Last week my four boys, along with more than 5,000 Somerville students, returned to school, gearing up for another year in the classroom and at sporting events, band concerts, art shows, and more. Most importantly, all of our students returned for another year of preparing for their future.

On September 6, 2018, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times
In July, US2 and USNC began meeting to negotiate a community benefits agreement for the Union Square revitalization as contemplated in the Development Covenant between US2 and the City.  The parties recently issued the following joint statement:
On 31 July, representatives of US2 (the designated master developer for the Union Square revitalization) and the Union Square Neighborhood Council (USNC) began to hold regular weekly meetings. They do so as the designated and mutually recognized parties to negotiate a Community Benefits Agreement for the Union Square revitalization project. Both parties have been pleased by the collaborative tone of these initial meetings and have agreed to a set of ground rules to guide their deliberations and decision-making.  As the negotiation process continues, the parties will discuss the issues outlined in the USNC’s CBA Report dated, March 2018 (http://bit.ly/2BJbu75).  Both parties look forward to sharing more information, through both joint and individual communiqués as the negotiations progress.

Life in the Ville by Jimmy Del Ponte

My dad graduated from Somerville High School in 1938, my mom in 1944, my sister in 1970, and I was in the class of 1971. My family did 12 years of serious time at SHS. I say that because even though we still managed to have the time of our lives in high school, the teachers were tougher and the rules were stricter.

Newstalk – September 5

On September 5, 2018, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

Thank goodness that the Somerville Chamber of Commerce and its director Steve Mackey saw that the meeting on the closing of the Ball Square Bridge last week was not what the 150 residents and businesses were hoping for. The Chamber is having a Green Line Extension buffet breakfast at the Holiday Inn on Tuesday, September 11, 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. It is very important for the businesses from Ball Square and any of the residents as well to attend. Hopefully, the community can work out something else instead of closing out the entire bridge for 12-14 months. Political figures should be answering to the community for what they are allowing to happen. Think about how you vote for these people to represent you to be your voice. That is not happening here. Let’s hope the paid help at City Hall won’t be up there again lecturing us on the impact and why it’s happening. Working out another solution is what they should be doing. What’s wrong with our Senator and State Representatives, never mind the local Board of Aldermen, who are busy wasting time banning T-shirts. We thank the Chamber of Commerce and Winter Hill Bank for sponsoring this. Be there and make your voice heard. If Medford and other communities can close half a bridge at a time, then Somerville should be no different.
