As part of the ongoing Somerville Ave. Utility & Streetscape Improvements Project, a work zone will require detour for through traffic from November 2018 through approximately April 2019. Access to businesses will be maintained.

Zoning Ordinance Public Hearing, October 30

The Somerville Board of Aldermen Committee on Land Use, and the Somerville Planning Board, invite all interested community members to a joint Public Hearing on the adoption of a new Somerville Zoning Ordinance. The Hearing will take place on Tuesday, October 30, at 6 p.m. in the East Somerville Community School auditorium, 50 Cross Street. The new ordinance would supercede the current ordinance as originally adopted in 1990.  Public comments will also be accepted by mail to OSPCD, Planning Division, 93 Highland Avenue, Somerville, MA 02143; by fax to 617-625-0722; or by email to planning@somervillema.gov.

Somerville Planning Director and Harvard University Lecturer for Planning and Design George Proakis Named New Head of OSPCD

Somerville Senior Planner Sarah Lewis and Recent National Board Member of the Congress for the New Urbanism Named New Planning Director

After a decades-long distinguished career in community planning and economic development, including seven years at the helm of the City’s Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development (OSPCD), Michael Glavin has announced his retirement. Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone has named the City’s current nationally respected Director of Planning George Proakis the new Executive Director of OSPCD. Mayor Curtatone also announced that current Somerville Senior Planner Sarah Lewis, who led numerous community-based urban planning and design projects nationally before joining the City staff in 2016, will be the new Director of Planning. The transition will take place in late November.

Pardon my blunt

Police received a call from Assembly Row Security regarding an unwanted male in the elevator vestibule of Montaje Apartments on Canal St. and an officer was dispatched to investigate.

Upon arrival, the officer observed a man, later identified as Anthony Hooker, standing outside the elevators. He exited the building and stood outside directly across from the train station.

My cousins’ mother (my aunt) and my dad were brother and sister and were both born in the house.

City holds further discussion on marijuana licensing ordinance

On Monday of this week, members of Somerville Stands Together (SST) held a rally in Union Square, openly calling for the City of Somerville to require developer US2 to agree to a Community Benefits Agreement that includes a Project Labor Agreement, to make sure that, as they put it, Somerville benefits from the planned projects.

Demonstrators carried signs and chanted slogans such as, “Somerville stands for affordable housing! Somerville stands for good, union jobs! Somerville stands together!”
