West Branch Library to close for renovations

Beginning in January 2019, the 109-year-old West Branch Library will undergo renovations to expand and enhance programming and resources, community space, and operations, following a lengthy community process which culminated earlier this year.

The West Branch Library will close to the general public in mid-November to provide time for staff to prepare for the renovation. During the temporary closure, a small, temporary branch library location will be available at the Tufts Administration Building, 167 Holland St., 2nd floor, with potential additional locations to be determined at a later date.

Poldark in Somerville

My wife’s obsession with the English TV show, Poldark sparked an interest in the metal tin for me. However, in the show, they mine copper in Cornwall. Ha. Wrong. It was tin they mined in Cornwall. But, I guess nobody knows what tin is (or doesn’t care) so, they changed it to the more exciting copper mining.

Dear Editor,

I am a 32-year-old teacher and mom from Somerville. My health history is complicated by severe Crohn’s disease that I have struggled with since I was 21. I have had three surgeries at MGH. Recovering from abdominal surgery is difficult, and I relied on nurses for everything including sitting up, pain management, using the bathroom, bathing, and caring for my pre-term baby after a difficult Caesarean section.

Residents are invited to join City staff to plant bulbs that will bloom in Spring 2019. Since the Bulb Blitz began in 2011, residents have planted nearly 15,000 bulbs citywide!

The Baker-Polito Administration announced on Friday that the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) will replace the multi-sports field and field lighting located at Foss Park in the City of Somerville.

The $1.2 million project will include synthetic field turf installation, field drainage improvements, and field lighting and pathway upgrades and installation. Construction at the park will begin in the spring and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2019.
