Celebrate East Somerville’s history and the legacy of Paul Revere

Monday, November 19  join  Mayor  Joseph Curtatone and the team at Holiday Inn Boston-Bunker Hill for a ceremony that will celebrate East Somerville’s rich history and the legacy of Paul Revere.

The event will kick off with remarks from Mayor Curtatone, followed by the unveiling of a new Paul Revere statue at the corner of Washington Street and Inner Belt Road. A bronze statue weighing in excess of 2,000 pounds, the monument will pay tribute to Paul Revere’s patriotic legacy and all that he accomplished in the state of Massachusetts. The statue’s new spot will also serve as the new home of an existing marker that tracks Paul Revere’s ride along this Somerville route on his midnight ride to Lexington and Concord.

Progressive plan sets short- and medium-term action steps to prepare for climate change, targets 13 action areas like stormwater management, electric vehicles, net-zero and resilient buildings, energy supply, tree canopy, and more.

To prepare for and reduce the effects of climate change, the City of Somerville has developed a comprehensive climate change plan, Somerville Climate Forward, which will officially be presented during a special “Green Carpet” event on Wednesday, November 28, at Somerville’s own global clean tech hub Greentown Labs.

Nutrition therapy manages diabetes through healthy choices

Dietitians Andrea Svartsrom and Julia Rinehart are providing free, in-home medical nutrition therapy for people with diabetes or non-dialysis kidney disease through Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services (SCES).

A free, in-home medical nutrition therapy program that helps people with diabetes or non-dialysis kidney disease is now being offered through Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services (SCES).

Available at no cost for Cambridge, Medford, and Somerville residents with Medicare Part B coverage and certain diagnoses, the nutrition therapy program provides a personalized plan for managing health and ongoing professional support, explained SCES Registered Dietitian Julia Rinehart.

Somerville to host Transgender Day of Remembrance ceremony

Curtatone, the Somerville Department of Health and Human Services, and the Somerville High School Gender and Sexuality Awareness Alliance (GSAA) on Tuesday, November 20, at 2:45 p.m., for a ceremony in honor of Transgender Day of Remembrance. The ceremony will take place on the City Hall concourse, 93 Highland Ave. The ceremony’s speaking agenda will include Mayor Curtatone, Somerville LGBTQ Liaison Jess Alter, Somerville High School GSAA Advisor Sarah Eustis, and student representatives from GSAA, followed by a raising of the Transgender Flag. The event is open to the public, and all community members are welcome. Somerville’s Veterans Day holiday schedule

On Monday, November 12, City and Somerville Public Schools offices will be closed in observance of Veterans Day. Because of the holiday, trash collection will be on a one-day delay all week. There will not be street sweeping on Monday and parking meters and resident parking permits will not be enforced.

 

Unruly Studios helps Somerville students with ‘Splats’

Mayor Joseph Curtatone, School Supt. Mary Skipper, Unruly Founder Bryanne Leeming, and AT&T New England President, Patricia Jacobs came to the Winter Hill Community School Wednesday to watch the 6th graders there demonstrate how they use tiles called “Splats” to help them learn to code. You can check out what the Splats do at: https://www.unrulysplats.com. Unruly was the winner of AT&T’s Aspire Accelerator grant. During the event, Bryanne Leeming announced that AT&T had made additional funding support to Unruly that will allow the startup to expand their STEM pilot program to every K-8 school in the city of Somerville.

Tori Antonino grew up in suburbia, in the town of Braintree, went to college at Colby, and has been living in Somerville for the past two decades. She owns and runs her own ecological landscaping business, and is a passionate activist, advocating for the creation of more green and open space.

Antonino is the co-founder of Green and Open Somerville, which recently lead a community installation of the CPA funded Butterfly Garden Pocket Park, at Summer Street and Craigie, a nature space that “is going to be gorgeous. We need open green spaces for the health of the community, we need nature for sanity and physical health. We need to use our greenspace to restore the ecosystem and bring back the pollinators, and reel in climate change.”
