Mayor Curtatone hospitalized with severe case of shingles virus

Somerville Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone is not expected to attend public events or work from his office at City Hall for the next few weeks due to a severe case of the shingles virus.

Mayor Curtatone was recently hospitalized with the shingles virus, which is the same as the virus that causes chickenpox. The illness, which nearly one-third of adults experience in their lifetime, is not life-threatening though it can be quite painful, and in rare cases, the inner ear and facial nerves are affected, as is the case with Mayor Curtatone.

Deadline Extended: Nominate properties for 2019 Preservation Awards

Winners to be presented during Historic Preservation Month in May 2019.

The Somerville Historic Preservation Commission (SHPC) has extended the deadline to submit nominations for the 2019 Preservation Awards. Applications will be accepted through Monday, December 10.

During its annual celebration in honor of Historic Preservation Month in May 2019, the Commission will honor Somerville residents who performed significant restoration or maintenance efforts on designated historic buildings, or on non-designated buildings erected before 1967.

Winthrop Rd. on charges of failure to stop or yield, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, speeding, motor vehicle operator giving false name or address to a police officer, failure to stop for police, and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and on a warrant charge of larceny by check over $1200.

Sean Romano, of 22 Thorpe St., November 21, 1:31 p.m., arrested at home on charges of possession of a large capacity firearm, possession of a firearm without FID card, and possession of ammunition without FID card, and on warrant charges of marked lanes violation and operation of a motor vehicle with license revoked as HTO.

Seven organizations, care providers, and volunteers were recognized for outstanding efforts on behalf of older adults at Serving Seniors 2018.

The awards ceremony was hosted by Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services (SCES) on Nov. 15. Speaking to more than 200 guests, SCES Executive Director Paul Hollings said the theme was honoring those who work together to benefit older adults in Cambridge and Somerville.

Do you understand what I’m saying? is a site-specific installation by artist Gabriel Sosa and organized by A R E A with the support of the Somerville Arts Council. The work explores the imperfections and ambiguities inherent in language and communication. Drawn from his experiences as a court interpreter, the questions printed in vinyl on the glass exude a sense of doubt, power, and intimidation that can be found not only in the court system but in multiple current events, both social and political. On the further wall, the drawings made by hand hint at the more emotional, human experiences at the root of these events – separated, at a distance, and often obscured.

Devoted husband of Nair (Raposa) Borges for 72 Years. Loving father of Maria Lurdes Borges, Margaret Borges and her husband Joe Davalos, Carlos Manuel Borges, Shelia Borges Foley and her husband Robert Foley and the late Mario Borges. Cherished grandfather of Mario Borges, Celeste McNerney, Krista Burke and Robert Mario Foley. Adored great-grandfather of Arianna and Nicholas Borges, Liam and Hunter McNerney, Kaylie and Aiden Burke. Also survived by his sister Ana Maria Tavares, his brother Antonio Borges, many nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives and friends.
