Buena Vista Rd. to Cambridge Line reopens

The Somerville Community Path between Buena Vista Road and the Cambridge City is once again open to pedestrians and cyclists as of Thursday morning, November 29, 2018.

Over the last few months, this portion of the path had been closed for construction to repair the drainage system and to upgrade a retaining wall. These enhancements will alleviate recurring flooding issues and improve safety along the path.

Reaching for the gold led him to jail

Police officers were dispatched to the Kmart store on Middlesex Ave. last Friday at 1:46 a.m. on reports of a shoplifting in progress.

Upon arrival, the officers met with the store loss prevention officer who stated that man had broken into the jewelry case and took a chain. It was believed that he concealed the chain in a comforter bag that was in the shopping cart.

Obituary: Charles J. Breen

Charles Joseph Breen died peacefully on November 26, 2018 with his wife by his side. Mike, as he was known, was born on October 17, 1934 in Winchester, MA, the son of James and Lena. Charles was the beloved husband of Dolores “Dee” (Murphy) and the cherished father of Charles Jr. (Kathy), Tracy Birchall (Paul), Scott (Sharon), Cindy Breen-Langevin (Peter) and Todd (Michelle). Adored grandfather of Patrick, Caitlin, Caroline, Aidan, Murphy Langevin and Sophia. Predeceased by his eight siblings; James, Henry, Thomas, Bill, Francis, George, Alice and Robert. Veteran of U.S. Air Force, retired Somerville Firefighter.

The landscape of Somerville is ever changing. An old familiar structure suddenly disappears, briefly turns into a huge hole, then in a few months, emerges as condos! More taxpayers, more city revenue!) I’m still waiting for our taxes to level off because of all the new businesses in Assembly)

When I’m driving through Somerville with a friend or one of my kids, I find myself saying, “That’s where my friends Jay and Jimmy used to live,” or, “That’s where we used to get delicious treats when Apollo Cake was there!” Then I’ll say, “My friend Mike worked at a gas station where those condos are being built.”

A State of Massachusetts House bill aimed at expunging the criminal records of those who have been arrested for marijuana use has garnered the support of the Somerville Board of Aldermen.

A resolution put forward at the latest regular meeting of the Board of Aldermen by Alderman At-Large Wilfred N. Mbah and Ward 1 Alderman Matthew McLaughlin expresses support for MA House Bill 2785, “An Act Relative to the Expungement of Records of Marijuana Arrests,” and requests that the state delegation vote in favor of it.

Speaking in favor of the resolution, Alderman Mbah said that along the lines of being fair and equitable as lawmakers, any time that legislation or bills are passed that treat people with fairness and justice they should align themselves accordingly.

The annual Next Wave/Full Circle Tree Lot will be open November 30 through December 19. Stop by and pick up a holiday tree and/or wreath, and support Somerville youth. All proceeds from the Tree Lot sales go toward student programming. The Tree Lot will be located at the Full Circle Garden on Cross Street, between Otis and Bonair Streets. The Lot is staffed by Next Wave/Full Circle students and staff and will be open from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Mondays–Fridays, 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturdays, and 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays.

The City of Somerville set some bold goals this year when it comes to housing – Mayor Joseph Curtatone joined a 15-community coalition that aims to increase housing production in the Greater Boston area to 185,000 new units by 2030.

In addition to the goals of the coalition, the city has made some of its own housing commitments. Its award-winning “SomerVision: 2010-2030 Comprehensive Plan” commits to the construction of 6,000 new housing units.
