Lawrence Polindor, of 61 Tufts St., March 25, 7:20 a.m., arrested at Tufts St. on warrant charges of miscellaneous equipment violation, obstructed non-transparent window, and operation of a motor vehicle with a suspended license.

Matthew Henebury, of 70 Boston St., March 26, 4:40 p.m., arrested at Beacon St. on charges of felony daytime breaking and entering and larceny from a building.

Somerville has three new firefighters

Three new firefighters will be joining the ranks of the Somerville Fire Department as of April 8th. Timothy McKenzie, John Gullage and Virgilio Garcia were sworn in at the City Council meeting on Thursday, March 28th.

Street sweeping resumes, April 1

Somerville’s street cleaning program is an essential public works program that not only keeps our city cleaner but also reduces the risk of flooding and icing due to clogged storm drains. It also keeps debris out of our sewer system. The street sweeping season runs from April 1 to December 31 each year. Check the signs on your street, or look up your street sweeping schedule and sign up for street sweeping alerts at www.somervillema.gov/sweeping to avoid parking tickets.

City of Somerville announces 2019 Teen Summer Jobs Program

Attention Somerville Youth! The Mayor’s Summer Jobs Program will be accepting applications for summer 2019 starting Monday, April 1. Through the annual program, more than 100 Somerville teens will be placed within City departments as well as with private business partners in Somerville. Eligible students must be Somerville residents, enrolled in high school, and at least 16 years of age. Limited opportunities are available for youth that are at least 14 years of age with the Department of Recreation.

On Saturday and Sunday, April 6 and 7, the remainder of the Homans building, on Medford St. near the Pearl St. intersection, will be demolished as part of Green Line Extension construction. Demo began at the rear of the building in mid-March and has progressed incrementally since then.

Taking down the bridge

Demolition of the Broadway/Ball Sq. bridge began last weekend. The heavy equipment tore into the steel and concrete structure, taking it apart bit by bit. Transit police were on hand to help redirect traffic and keep the public safe from harm.

 

7-Month Washington St. bridge closure starts Monday, April 8

For the next phase of work on the Green Line Extension (GLX) Project, the Washington St. bridge, in East Somerville near McGrath Highway, will close for construction beginning Monday, April 8, at about 10 p.m. This bridge will close for two separate phases: first, from April 8 through approximately November 2019, then again from about April 2020 through August 2020.

As a Somerville homeowner, I applaud the Tree Protection amendment to Somerville’s zoning ordinance introduced by City Councilors Mark Niedergang and JT Scott (“Legal protections for Somerville’s trees”, February 13, 2019). Opponents of this amendment argue that it is a regulatory intrusion and an undue financial burden on homeowners. However, they are mistaken on both counts.
