It’s been getting pretty darn hot lately. And it’s looking like we’ll be facing a good little stretch of even more hot weather in the days and – yes, even maybe – the weeks to come.

The city has opened cooling centers now. Thanks for that. Beyond this there’s little to be done other than exercise a little common sense to minimize dangers of heat stroke. Watch your activity levels, get plenty of water, etc. Just be careful and do the right things. You’ll make it.

Most readers of the Times will have noticed that Ayanna Pressley, Somerville’s Representative in U.S. Congress, has been thrust into the media spotlight lately as a result of personal attacks by the President. However, Times readers and Representative Pressley’s constituents in general may not be aware that Representative Pressley recently took a major step in defense of American democracy, which has received too little attention: she signed on as a cosponsor of H.J. Res. 48, also known as the “We the People Amendment,” which if enacted would amend the U.S. Constitution to affirm that (1) money spent to influence elections shall be regulated by Congress and the states and is not considered protected free speech under the First Amendment, and (2) rights granted under the United States Constitution are the rights of natural persons, and are not the rights of artificial incorporated entities.

The City of Somerville is currently seeking applicants for one open position on the Somerville Conservation Commission. The Conservation Commission is devoted to preserving and protecting Somerville’s natural environment with an emphasis on several specific areas: wetlands, open space, and community gardens. The key responsibility of members is to protect the City’s wetlands and rivers via their authority to administer and enforce the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act and Rivers Protection Act. In addition, the Commission plays an important role as a sounding board for open space planning and open space initiatives. The City’s community gardens program, which offers gardening plots to residents, is also overseen by the Commission.

Obituary: Vincent Piro

Vincent J. Piro, Age 78, of Medford and East Dennis, formally of Somerville, Mass., died peacefully on July 19 surrounded by family. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Karen Lee (Kelly) Piro, 18 months ago. He was a devoted father to Lisa Bowler and her husband, Brian, and Vincent and Michael Piro. He was a loving grandfather to Katie and Will Bowler and Ella and Vincent Piro.
