Lately, we have had to contend with ridiculously cold temperatures.

Remember, when cold snaps like this happen, the temperatures outside can actually be much colder than you think. Always play it safe and follow some simple guidelines, such as those that have been offered by the city. Here are some important highlights:

The Boston area has lost a great voice and friend in poetry. At the age of 99, David Ferry passed on Sunday, November 5. As a remembrance, I wanted to share my introduction to David’s reading at the Hastings Room on November 4, 2015. As I’ve recalled elsewhere, that evening while David read, a cellist was practicing Bach in a nearby room at First Church, where we do the readings. The sonorous draws of the bow across the cello seemed so appropriate for David’s reading, the beauty and classical air of the music sweeping softly behind his voice. I know many will be remembering David with gratitude for the generosity he showed in his encouragement, in his classes at Suffolk with George Kalogeris, as well as reading our manuscripts. I know I feel a great loss, but as great a gratitude.

Tom Miller is a retired businessman who does voiceover work and writes poetry. He is also the lead guide at two historical houses in Salem MA owned and operated by Historic New England.  His work has appeared in The Muddy River Poetry Review, The Wilderness House Literary Review, Ibbetson Street, First Literary East and a variety of other journals as well as several anthologies. Tom is a frequent performer at various venues on the North Shore and in the Greater Boston area. A native of Ohio he resides in Ipswich, MA, with his wife and a very stubborn but lovable dog.

Among the recipients is the Somerville Homeless Coalition.

Sincere Foundation  announced that it has completed its first full grant cycle and distributed $250,000 across twenty nonprofit organizations that address basic needs in Massachusetts. The grants support programs that align with Sincere Foundation’s three key funding priorities: food security, housing stability, and safe spaces. Boston-based technology company Sincere Corporation created Sincere Foundation in 2023. The Foundation is made possible by the support of the Company’s family of brands: Punchbowl®, Timehop®, and Memento®.

GLX work continues in January

Following the successful completion of recent work along the Green Line D branch, the MBTA announced service changes in January on the Green Line to give MBTA riders a smoother, faster, more reliable trip.  

Somerville residents of all ages are invited to share in the spirit of service this winter by donating to the MLK Day Community Donation Drive. Donated items will help support our unhoused and displaced neighbors.
