Don’t wait on flu shots in 2020

Flu season is coming soon, and Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services (SCES) is urging older adults to get vaccinated before the end of October.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 50 to 70 percent of flu-related hospitalizations in recent years occurred among people age 65 and over, with more than 70 percent of flu-related deaths occurring in that age group.

ResiStat to hold virtual, topic-based fall meetings

With the city still unable to hold in-person meetings due to coronavirus concerns, ResiStat will host a series of virtual events in the coming weeks, giving residents the opportunity to engage with Somerville elected officials and staff on key topics. The fall ResiStat series kicked off with an arts community town hall on September 15 and will continue with five more installments beginning on Thursday, October 15, covering the city’s COVID-19 response, housing issues during this pandemic, mental health and wellness, racial and social justice, and senior issues.

Somerville resident wins 4 5K routes + 9-mile paddle event

The pandemic has shown that high quality parks and paths and a healthy local environment are needed now more than ever. Last week, nearly 100 Mystic River Watershed Association (MyRWA) supporters joined the Virtual Herring Run and Paddle (#VirtualHRP) – a week-long, physically distant version of the organization’s annual Herring Run and Paddle – to show their support for continued environmental improvements in the watershed.

Somerville Police officers were dispatched to the Mercedes-Benz of Boston dealership on McGrath Hwy. in the early morning hours of last Thursday for a check condition of a male party in a vehicle located in the parking lot.

Up arrival, police made contact with a delivery driver, who pointed out a man sitting inside one of the dealership’s Mercedes.

Michael McGrath, a Somerville police officer, was placed on administrative leave and his pay revoked after an investigation into an October 1, 2019 arrest reportedly turned up evidence that he had used pepper spray on a suspect who had been placed under arrest and was already in handcuffs.

Happy 100th birthday dad

On October 5 my dad would have been 100 years old. He grew up in Somerville when a movie ticket was 15 cents, gas cost 30 cents a gallon, and a new house was around five grand.

Ferdinando DelPonte, or Fred for short, was born right in the house, on Elmwood St., between Teele and Davis Squares, in 1920. He was the oldest of six with a younger brother and 4 sisters. So, on this momentous occasion, on what would have been my Dad’s 100th birthday, I present this remembrance/tribute to lifelong Somerville resident, my dad, Fred DelPonte.
