In its third and largest round of COVID-19 business relief to date, the City of Somerville has made an additional $5 million available for small businesses affected by the pandemic. 

The city will administer awards of up to $25,000 to eligible restaurants, fitness and recreation facilities, theaters, nightclubs, and other businesses impacted by government-directed closures. Applications and full eligibility requirements are available at somervillema.gov/BizRelief. Translated versions in multiple languages will be published in the coming days. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis starting Friday, January 8.

SPD update: January 2, shooting at 300 block of Lowell St.

Early Saturday morning January 2, at approximately 4:25 a.m., a 24-year-old male was shot in the forearm while leaving a residence on the 300 block of Lowell St. after an altercation at a private party. Somerville Police responded, and the victim, a Boston resident, was transported to MGH where he was treated for non-life-threatening injury and released. This appears to be an isolated incident. Police continue to investigate.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) has launched a new phase of the #StateWithoutStigMA public information campaign aimed at reducing the stigma of substance addiction that prevents people with substance use disorders from seeking treatment. The campaign launches at a time when the state is experiencing a slight rise in overdose deaths as it continues to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.
