Join in on commemorating and celebrating Juneteenth at Bow Market through a showcase of Black Art and Culture
 
June is Black Music Month – circa Jimmy Carter in 1979 – the intention is to honor the legacy of Black musical expression as an essential conduit for Black strife, melancholy, joy, and celebration. Few articulate the cultural symbiosis of music and Blackness like Hanif Abdurraqib (Go Ahead in the Rain: Notes to a Tribe Called Quest) and Stephanie Phillips (Why Solange Matters) – two of  the  spotlight authors for the day. In the spirit of the best musical collabs, they will  partnering with Vinyl Index to offer some irresistible vinyl + book bundles because it’s Juneteenth.

The City of Somerville Health and Human Services Department hosted a Growing Gardeners workshop last Friday and Saturday for Somerville residents who were brand new to gardening. The goal of the event was to provide gardening knowledge and supplies to people who have never gardened before. Many residents don’t have the opportunity to utilize these resources.

Annual Fireworks Display Planned for June 30 at Trum Field

DJ Brother Cleve and Booty Vortex will provide pre-fireworks entertainment

The City of Somerville will host its annual Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration at Trum Field on Wednesday, June 30 (rain date July 1).

Live entertainment at Trum Field will begin at 6:30 p.m. with DJ Brother Cleve playing pop, soul, funk, and other classic tunes followed by Booty Vortex taking the stage at 8:00 p.m. Fireworks will begin at approximately 9:15 p.m.

Father’s Day is Sunday. My mind goes back to a familiar smell. Old Spice aftershave, a newspaper’s ink and cigarette smoke. Yes, Old Spice, that was my dad’s signature scent.

Anyway, instead of doing a story about how great our dads were, I’m going the other way. Stories about how our dads may have inadvertently embarrassed us, with love, of course.

City FY22 budget meetings to continue in virtual format

On June 16, Governor Charlie Baker signed legislation allowing cities and towns to continue holding meetings virtually. The Somerville City Council will continue to hold ongoing Finance Committee and full City Council meetings on the fiscal year 2022 budget virtually. All planned budget meetings begin at 6:00 p.m. and can be viewed by visiting the “Meeting Schedules and Streaming” tab at www.somervillema.gov/citycouncil or tuning into GovTV (channel 13 on RCN and 22 on Comcast).

During the recent City Council meeting on June 10, Director of Racial and Social Justice Denise Molina Capers presented a communication to the Council regarding the proposed inaugural budget to establish the City’s first Racial and Social Justice (RSJ) Office. Director Molina Capers called on the City Council to show support for the RSJ Office with our words and actions. City holds town hall on supervised consumption sites

A virtual town hall meeting was held last week concerning the possible installation of a supervised consumption site in Somerville.

On Thursday of last week, the City of Somerville held a supervised consumption site town hall. The meeting focused on data concerning these sites and the need for them in Somerville.

The meeting was led by Director of Health and Human Services Doug Kress and attended by Mayor Joseph Curtatone and President of the Somerville City Council Matt McLaughlin.
