Jean F. (Carroll) Rossi, 86, of Gardner, died peacefully Friday, August 6, 2021, in Wachusett Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Gardner, after a long illness.
Born in Somerville on December 21, 1934, she was the daughter of the late George and Anna (Finn) Carroll. She graduated from Somerville High School with the Class of 1952. Jean was a Telephone Operator employed by Bill Atlantic – New England Telephone for several years until her retirement.

The City of Somerville seeks three residents to serve on the City’s Traffic Board. The Traffic Board is an appointed body that reviews decisions of the City’s Traffic Commission upon appeal petitions. If a decision of the Traffic Commission is appealed, the Traffic Board is required to hold a public hearing, accept public testimony, and issue a ruling to approve or disapprove the action of the Traffic Commission. Members will serve in a volunteer capacity for a term of one to three years.

Applications due September 8 to vote by mail in the September 14 preliminary City election
Somerville voters will have the option to vote by mail in the upcoming city preliminary election on Tuesday, September 14, and general election on Tuesday, November 2. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has approved voting by mail for all municipal elections in the state in 2021, and local voters should be receiving vote-by-mail notices from the Secretary of State’s office in the coming days.

SUV on Broadway hit by bullets.
On August 9, at 11:00 p.m., shots were fired into a white SUV on Broadway in Somerville. The back of the vehicle had several bullet holes, and the windshield was shot out. No injuries were reported.
On August 9, at approximately 11:15 p.m., Somerville Police responded to Myrtle St for report of multiple shots fired. Upon arrival, officers located a male party nearby who stated that he and three other individuals were inside a parked vehicle when suddenly they were shot at numerous times. No injuries were reported. Police recovered nineteen shell casings and located several vehicles with ballistic damage. Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Somerville Police Department at 617-625-1600 ext. 7231.

A series of traffic changes will be installed in Powder House Circle later this month to make this high-crash intersection safer and more predictable for all users.
Description of Work
The antiquated rotary will be converted into a modern roundabout using low-cost “quick-build” materials like paint, signage, and flex posts. These changes will help inform the eventual large-scale reconstruction of the circle.

Dorothy “Dotty” (Lanza) Nielson, 1940 – 2021
Dorothy “Dotty” (Lanza) Nielson of Somerville, Massachusetts passed away peacefully at her home on August 5, 2021. Beloved mother of Maryann, Kathy, Michael, Karen and Richard. Cherished grandmother of eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. And a devoted sister to her twin Rose Lewis. She opened her home to anyone that needed a place to stay. No words can describe how much Dotty will be missed by her family and friends.

Candidates vying to be the next mayor of Somerville discussed issues of interest to older adults at a special forum on August 5, 2021.
The City of Somerville Elections Department is hiring polling place workers for the municipal elections on September 14 and November 2, 2021.
Polling place workers will be paid $200 per day and work from 6:30 a.m. until shortly after the polls close at 8:00 p.m., with a two-hour break. You must be a registered Massachusetts voter to work at a polling place. No prior experience necessary.
