Michael Guevarez, of Lawrence, March 31, 5:11 p.m., arrested at Broadway on a warrant charge of fugitive from justice on court warrant.

 

Somerville resident Garrett Tingle Jr. and his father are running the Boston Marathon for the Heather Abbott Foundation.

Heather was affected by the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings and unfortunately had to have one of her legs amputated as a result after many surgeries to try and save it. Heather launched HAF to help other amputees and has an 11-person running team (Team Limb-it Less) ready to run and raise funds to provide protheses for those in need.

On Friday, April 1, family owned and operated, Sav-Mor Liquors celebrated the opening of their new location, 325 Canal Street, Assembly Row. Mayor Katjana Ballantyne, Councilors-at-Large Jake Wilson and Kristen Strezo, Somerville Chamber of Commerce President, Stephen Mackey were on hand to help generations of the Weiner family celebrate their grand opening.

Team SCES walking to support Meals on Wheels

A group of Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services (SCES) staffers are walking this spring to support food security locally and statewide.

Team SCES is participating in the 2022 Project Bread Walk for Hunger to raise funds for SCES Meals on Wheels and Project Bread’s hunger relief efforts across the Commonwealth.

The City of Somerville seeks three artists to serve on the newly created Somerville Armory Master Plan Committee. After acquiring the Armory building at 191 Highland Avenue last year, the city has initiated a master planning process to support the space as a City-owned arts resource. The Committee will guide municipal consultants and staff in developing the Somerville Armory Master Plan in preparation for transitioning the property into a public community arts center.

At a recent poetry reading Somerville Poet Laureate Lloyd Schwartz handed me a poetry anthology. Not just any poetry anthology, but this collection is by Somerville High School students. Schwartz got a grant from the Academy of American Poets, funded by the Mellon Foundation. He has used some of this grant money to encourage and publish young poets. Apply for the Mayor’s Summer Jobs Program

Calling all Somerville high school students! Apply for the Mayor’s Summer Jobs Program starting Monday, April 4.  

Through this annual program, the City of Somerville hires teenage participants to work in the Parks and Recreation Department, Somerville Public Libraries, and other City offices. As part of her First 100 Days Agenda, Mayor Katjana Ballantyne has expanded this year’s program to include jobs focused on climate justice for the first time, within the Department of Public Works.

The City of Somerville seeks volunteers to help with the Patriots’ Day Colonial Fair on Monday, April 18, at Foss Park. Volunteers will oversee colonial games, serve refreshments, and coordinate poetry readings. Setup starts at 9:00 a.m., and the fair is from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. in Foss Park on Broadway near Fellsway West. Somerville High School students can earn community service credits. Interested? March 16 marked the one-year anniversary of the shooting spree in Atlanta in which eight people were killed, six of them women of Asian descent. Most importantly when reflecting on this tragedy, we must remember and amplify the names of the deceased: Xiaojie “Emily” Tan, Daoyou Feng, Delaina Yaun, Paul Michels, Suncha Kim, Soon Chung Park, Hyun Jung Grant, and Yong Ae Yue.
