The Somerville High School Robotics team’s work took on a frenetic pace in January 2022, with students working long hours after school to problem-solve and engineer solutions to prepare their competition robot, BONK. Every year, there is a new challenge and the 2022 challenge, Rapid React, includes fifteen seconds of functioning autonomously. Then team drivers pick up the remote control and, for the remaining two minutes and fifteen seconds of competition, control the robot as it picks up cargo (balls), moves into position and shoots cargo into a lower or upper basket, and then spends the last seconds of the match climbing a set of bars. Each successfully accomplished task earns the team points.

Patriots’ Day Colonial Fair, Monday, April 18

On Monday, April 18, for the first time since 2017, the City of Somerville will be celebrating Patriots’ Day outdoors and in person at Foss Park on Broadway from 10 to 11:30 a.m. 

This event will feature a reenactment of Paul Revere’s famous ride from Boston to Lexington — which happened to pass right through Somerville.

The Board of Directors at the Center for Arts at the Armory is pleased to announce that effective April 1, Jess White has been promoted to the position of Chief Operating Officer (COO). White joined Arts at the Armory in August 2021 as Operations Manager, and quickly demonstrated her capacity to join CEO and now Co-Director Stephanie Scherpf, and the Board of Directors in the leadership of the non-profit organization, which serves as a vital hub for arts, culture and community for Somerville and Greater Boston.

A walk-in COVID-19 vaccine clinic for initial doses and boosters will be held April 13 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the West Branch of the Somerville Public Library at 40 College Ave. The Pfizer vaccine will be available for all people 5 years and up, and boosters will be available for all people 12 years and up. Walk-ins are accepted, or you can pre-register at somervillema.gov/vaccine. The clinic is free, regardless of immigration status or health insurance. Identification is not required.

Somerville resident Ellenor Barish set to run Boston Marathon

Local Somerville resident Ellenor Barish is eager to do something she has not done in 17 long years: complete a marathon. She will also do it in one of the most iconic races of all, the 126th running of the Boston Marathon.

The race, scheduled to be run on April 18, is set to receive 30,000 runners from around the world. But for Barish this run means more than just running 26 miles, it also means representing a cause.

Green Line Extension (GLX) Project night work look-ahead

Night work activity expected to increase through  April 2022

Work Schedules are subject to change based on weather, track access, workforce availability, supply-chain issues, and other factors.

With the GLX Union Branch now in service and carrying passengers between Lechmere Station and Union Square Station on a regular schedule, the project continues to target a summer 2022 opening of the Medford Branch from East Somerville Station to Medford/Tufts Station.

Yard waste pickup begins April 19

Somerville’s yard waste pickup begins Tuesday, April 19. That week’s collection is on a one-day delay due to the Patriots’ Day Holiday on Monday, April 18, so put all trash, recycling, and yard waste out one day later than you normally would. A full yard waste calendar is available at somervillema.gov/yardwaste and will be in the Environmental Service Guide, which will be mailed to all households later this month.

A Somerville Police officer suffered a non-life-threatening injury via an unintentional discharge of the officer’s duty weapon causing injury.    

The incident occurred at approximately 4:00 p.m. on April 6. The injured officer was transported to an area hospital where the officer was treated and released. The officer is expected to make a full recovery.  No one else was injured.
