Coalition secures more than $23 million for three critical Mystic River coastal flood management projects  

The 20-member Resilient Mystic Collaborative gathered with dozens of elected officials and agency staff on Wednesday to celebrate an important step forward in their joint efforts to protect coastal cities along Greater Boston’s Mystic River from sea level rise and extreme coastal storms. More than $23 million in funding has been raised by the regional coalition to support three critical projects along the Mystic River that will address increased risks of coastal flooding.  

City representatives outlined the next set of plans for the 90 Washington Street complex for the public at last week’s informational public meeting.

90 Washington Street was home to the popular Cobble Hill Plaza shopping center from 1982 – 2016, hosting shops and small businesses vital to local residents. Closed for planned developments by the former owner, the site has been sitting vacant for more than six years.

I was totally amazed, and unaware of the vast amount of Somerville’s exciting history that was stored in the building on the corner of Westwood Rd. and Central St. I found later that I, as well as so many others that were born in Somerville, also did not know just what the purpose of that building was. Also, sad to know that many still do not., especially our new residents.

The Somerville Winter Farmers Market opens the season on November 5 at the Center for Arts at the Armory.

The Center for Arts at the Armory (CAA) announces that it will host and manage the 13th Annual Somerville Winter Farmers Market (SWFM) every Saturday beginning November 5 through April 8, 2023.

Eagle Feathers #264 – The Ether Controversy

On October 16, 1846, Charlton, Massachusetts’ native Dr. William T.G. Morton successfully administered ether for the first time. The following day, The Boston Evening Journal (later to merge with today’s Boston Herald) gave a detailed account of the successful, painless operation at McClean Hospital, a part of Massachusetts General Hospital. A dentist had taken the first giant step in eliminating surgical suffering.

The original HONK! festival returned in full force last weekend, bringing music and activism to the streets of Somerville and Cambridge. An early party was held in Union Square on Thursday, October 6, with five local brass bands playing booty-shakin’ tunes for you to dance the night away to. The main HONK! festival took place Friday – Sunday, with music all weekend in Davis Square and Harvard Square.

Whether it be homegrown or imported, we have at our fingertips an incredibly diverse and nearly exhaustive supply of mellifluous entertainment to keep us amused and amazed as we watch it pass through our community.

The same goes for commitment to political and social issues. It’s natural for the HONK! festival organizers to choose our community in which to hold this event. Activism thrives here, driven by a long tradition of dialog on important issues of the day and a genuine concern for the betterment of our own community as well as that of the world at large.

Craig Smith Jr., of Cambridge, October 4, 11:29 a.m., arrested on warrant charges of carrying a firearm without a license, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and assault to murder.

Christian Donaruma, of Cambridge, October 4, 5:11 p.m., arrested at Somerville Ave. on charges of violation of city ordinance possession of a dangerous weapon, shoplifting by concealing merchandise, and trespassing.
