Thomas Alva Edison, the father of over one thousand patented creations, gadgets and devices was said to be a genius. His own description of that word was “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.” His initial inventions, first a municipal vote counter, and second the ticker-tape machine, came to life in the electrical shop of Somerville’s Charles Williams.

Tony winner for Best Play in 2022 The Lehman Trilogy, playing at the Huntington Theatre through July 16, 2023. It tells the history of Lehman Brothers investment bank from its roots as a dry-goods store in Montgomery, AL, in the 1840s to the last involvement of anyone named Lehman in 1969, with the death of Robert Lehman, grandson of the founders. Over the course of three acts running three and a half hours, the play reveals the evolution of three Jewish European brothers on the make in America, and what their ambitions wrought.

Medford Police arrest suspect following assault

This morning, the Medford Police Department executed an arrest warrant at 278 Powder House Boulevard in Somerville where they took Nature Moncoeur, age 18, into custody. Mr. Moncoeur is being charged with Assault and Battery and Attempted Kidnapping after an assault of a female that took place on Royall Street in Medford on Sunday, July 3, 2023, at approximately 10:45pm. Our officers conducted a week-long investigation that involved tireless efforts to identify the party responsible for the incident. We would like to thank the Tufts Police Department, especially Sergeant Jessica Bruno, the Somerville Police Department and the Somerville Housing Police Department for their assistance on this case. Mr. Moncoeur is scheduled to be arraigned today at Somerville District Court.

Riverside Community Care has been awarded a grant that will allow the nonprofit to offer enhanced respite services to local families.

Riverside Community Care, a nonprofit leader in behavioral healthcare and human services, recently received a $900,000 grant through the Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS) to strengthen its capacity to support 100 caregivers and an estimated 150 youth with behavioral health challenges via a new innovative project, Caregivers SOAR (Sustainable Opportunities for Accessing Respite). The project will support and enhance services provided by Riverside’s long-standing community-based programs in Somerville and Cambridge.

Residents urged to use bug spray when outdoors

Friday, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) announced that West Nile virus (WNV) has been detected in mosquitoes in Massachusetts for the first time this year. The presence of WNV was confirmed by the Massachusetts State Public Health Laboratory in a mosquito sample collected July 6 in the town of Brookline in Norfolk County. No human or animal cases of WNV or Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) have been detected so far this year.
