Thomas DeFreitas was born in Boston. The first three words he ever spoke were ravioli, Woolworth’s, and McGovern. Thomas was educated at the Boston Latin School and at the University of Massachusetts. For the last decade and a half, he has lived in Arlington, MA, where he guzzles black coffee in the dead of night, venerates Hart Crane’s ghost, strikes up conversations with the spectre of Raymond Carver, and strives each day to do The Next Right Thing. His fourth collection of poems, Walking Between the Raindrops, was published by Kelsay Books in March 2025.

25013007: On 3/9/25 at approximately 5:51 p.m., Somerville Police responded to 779 McGrath Hwy. for a weapons call. Upon arrival, officers encountered two juvenile males who stated they were being chased by a group of five juveniles with knives. Officers located the group of juvenile suspects nearby and identified them. Officers recovered knives from two of the juvenile suspects.

Seven scholarships available to Somerville residents currently graduating in the Class of 2025 

Application Period closes March 31, 2025 

Mayor Katjana Ballantyne and the City of Somerville Municipal Scholarship Committee are reminding Somerville residents graduating high school in 2025 to apply now for seven municipal scholarship opportunities. Selected applicants will receive $1,000 to help with post-secondary education expenses.

On Sunday, March 16, the annual Race of Ireland road race will be held in and around the Davis, Teele, and Ball square areas. Brief traffic delays are expected mid-morning to midday.

Beginning around 9 a.m., detours will be set up to accommodate the start and finish lines in Davis Square. The start is at the intersection of Elm and Day Streets, and the finish is at the Community Path by Grove Street.

During the week of March 11, the City of Somerville is not only celebrating National 3-1-1 Day, it is marking the 20th anniversary of it’s 311 Constituent Services Office. The first 311 service to be established in the region, Somerville’s 311 team works year-round, around the clock, and through every storm to connect the Somerville community to City Hall and its services.

Phony phone arrest scams target residents

Ward 2 City Councilor J.T. Scott has been sounding the alarm about a malicious phone scam currently taking place locally.

A sophisticated scam operation that targets individuals has City Councilors concerned.

The phony phone arrest scam was brought up in conversation at the latest City Council Meeting on February 27 with the aim of warning residents and bringing awareness to these harassing calls.

“There have always been scammers,” said Ward 2 City Councilor J.T. Scott. “Particularly, they prey on residents who may not have English as a first language or some of our elderly residents.”
