Charitable Spice Packs Sold at Curio.com fight food insecurity
Thanksgiving is often a lavish feast for most people. But, many go hungry on this holiday. To spice things up and help those in need to access fresh, healthy food, Food For Free and Curio Spice Co. have launched Seasoned Greetings for the second year in a row. The charitable curated spice collection is available for sale starting November 1 at CurioSpice.com. A portion of the proceeds from all Seasoned Greetings packet sales will support the Somerville and Cambridge-based nonprofit’s food rescue and distribution efforts in 27 communities across Eastern Massachusetts.

As 1 in 3 Massachusetts households faces food insecurity, it is estimated that Bay Staters discard one million pounds of food per year. To tackle both issues of food waste and food insecurity, Lesley University has partnered with Food For Free – the leading food rescue and distribution nonprofit in Eastern Massachusetts – to repurpose excess food from the school’s dining halls to feed those in need through the nonprofit’s Heat-n-Eats program.

Vigil Scheduled for Monday, October 30, at 6:00 p.m. at The Dojo @ Somernova
Mayor Katjana Ballantyne, the Somerville Commission for Women, and RESPOND, Inc. are honored to invite residents to join the annual Domestic Violence Vigil on Monday, October 30, commemorating Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This year’s vigil aims to remember those who lost their lives to domestic violence in the last year, celebrate survivors’ resilience, and recommit ourselves as a community to ending domestic violence.

The last day for hazardous waste drop-off is Saturday, November 4; the last week for yard waste pickup December 4–12
The Somerville Department of Public Works (DPW) wishes to remind residents that the last days for hazardous and yard waste collection this season are quickly approaching. DPW collection of these materials will resume in Spring 2024 as per the usual seasonal cycle.

Unique New “POPS” Pocket Park Created via a Public-Private Initiative Offers Ample Lawn, Seating, and Hammock Posts
All are invited to join Somerville Mayor Katjana Ballantyne and Ward 2 City Councilor J.T. Scott to celebrate the official opening and dedication of the city’s newest park, Martha Perry Lowe Park. The ribbon cutting for this unique pocket-park – with not just seating but hammock posts – will take place on Monday, October 30, from 2:30 to 3:00 p.m. at Martha Perry Lowe Park (111 Lake Street). The park is the result of Somerville’s zoning initiative to require that public open space be created as part of qualifying private development.
