For millennia humans have treasured the color blue, using it to create both great works of art and ordinary but treasured household objects. Blue suggests royalty, peace, and tranquility. Even the words we use to describe shades of blue evoke a sense of beauty: turquoise, indigo, cerulean, periwinkle, cobalt, aquamarine. It is associated with the stillness of night, the calming waves of the ocean, and the cooling properties of water. This exhibition invites visitors to explore the many different meanings and uses of blue – through a collection of art, artifacts, regular household objects, fashion, and concepts. A celebration of all things blue.

Assault
On 10/4/23 at approximately 6:40 p.m., Somerville Police responded to 355 Broadway for report of an assault. Upon arrival, officers spoke with the victim who stated he was picking up food and was approached by an unknown male who yelled at him and threatened to come back with a gun. Shortly after, the male came back with another male party and they started attacking the victim with a metal pole.

Senate passes Frances Perkins Workplace Equity Act

Yesterday the Massachusetts Senate voted and passed Senator Patricia Jehlen’s (D-Somerville) bill S.1191 An Act relative to pay range transparency for a vote. Known as the“Frances Perkins Workplace Equity Act,” after the first woman to serve as U.S. Labor Secretary, this legislation builds on the state’s landmark Equal Pay Act, also originally sponsored by Senator Jehlen.

SomerStreets is the City of Somerville’s take on the internationally renowned Open Streets concept, closing busy city streets to vehicles.
