Somerville declares Snow Emergency effective 3 p.m. today

snowpowderhouseUpdated:The City of Somerville and Somerville Public Schools have announced that due to weather predictions for Tuesday, Jan. 21, all school activities after 6 p.m. and all public meetings for Tuesday evening have been cancelled, and Somerville Public Schools will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 22.  If you have questions or need any additional information, call 311.

In accordance with the City’s Snow Emergency Procedures, Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone has declared a snow emergency for the City of Somerville will go into effect at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21.  During snow emergencies, parking is allowed on the odd-numbered side of the street only (unless otherwise posted).  Cars not moved by 7 p.m. Tuesday evening will be subject to ticketing and towing.  Residents unable to find a parking space on the odd-numbered side of the street may park in any municipal or school parking lot for the duration of the emergency.  Full snow emergency and snow removal policies may be found on the city’s website at www.somervillema.gov/snow

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone, the Somerville Office of Commissions and the Somerville Public Schools announce the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration event, entitled, “The Dream: Equality for All,” to be held on Monday, Jan. 20, in observance of  national Martin Luther King Day. The 2014 event will be held at the East Somerville Community School auditorium from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and will include a keynote speech by Dr. Adenrele Awotona, Professor of Urban and Community Studies at UMass Boston, as well as live music, readings from Somerville student essays in response to the 2014 theme “Equality for All,” and an award presentation to community members who exemplify MLK’s legacy in the Somerville community. The event is free and open to the public.

While there are still plenty of details to be worked out and many more meetings to be held, a clear consensus is emerging on what Tufts should do as it solidifies its plans for the Powder House School on Broadway directly behind the Tufts Administration Building (TAB) on Holland Street. And what that looks like now is one office building, not two, and no residential developments on the site.

BOA commends St. Clements Football

A couple of blocks away from Conway Park in Somerville, an “art hacker” is working on one of her latest pieces as her friend’s birthday present in an open multifunctional workshop called the Artisan’s Asylum.

Melissa Glick is playing around with a piece of artwork her friend made years ago. It is a nude and athletic female body, painted with pink color and white circles. By the end of this February, this painting will be decorated with remnants from various electronic devices.

Rep. Provost heading to U.K. for climate change talks

provost_webState Rep. Denise Provost, D- Somerville, has been invited by the British Consulate in Washington, D.C., to join a government delegation traveling to Great Britain this month. The purpose of the trip is for state legislators from the United States to learn about initiatives by the U.K. and European Union to address climate change through a variety of legislative and public-policy measures. Provost, representing Massachusetts, will join state representatives and state senators from Maine, Michigan, Washington and Oregon for an intensively scheduled program of meetings, briefings and site visits.
