Each year, the Somerville Rotary Club awards two scholarships to deserving Somerville residents and high school seniors who are planning on going to college. On May 22, they were honored by the presence of one of this year’s scholarship winners at their weekly meeting. Mei Mei Collins, a senior at Somerville High School, President of the Somerville High School National Honor Society. Collins will be attending Harvard University in the fall to study Environmental Engineering.

Full Circle School held its graduation ceremony on June 6 at the Arts the Armory. Next Wave Junior High School and Full Circle High School teach to students who have difficulty learning in traditional educational settings. They are a safe place for everyone and every member of the school community is treated with respect.

On June 10, the Affordable Housing Organizing Committee held its 15th annual Save Our Homes Walk, a 5k march that raised funds contributing to the prevention of homelessness. Drawing together 100 walkers, the walk collected $33,625 to provide for emergency assistance.

On June 7, the Somerville Public Schools Special Education Department and the Health/Physical Education Department hosted Somerville’s Special Olympics School Day Games at Somerville’s Trum Field. Approximately 140 athletes from grades K-12 participated in events such as soccer, t-ball, and various relays.

Mayor Curtatone formally submitted his proposed FY19 city budget to the Somerville Board of Aldermen last week, now the subject of upcoming debate and possible revision.

Last Wednesday, June 6, Somerville Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone presented to the Board of Aldermen a breakdown of his proposed budget for the city’s 2019 fiscal year. An estimated $800,000+ in new equity investment is proposed.

On June 6, the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) voted unanimously to uphold the “by-right” building permit for the property on 130 Walnut St. The case was brought in front of the ZBA after an appeal by Justin Rank during the winter.

So far the July 4th fireworks at Trum Field, which is scheduled for Thursday, June 28, as of this week has not been cancelled. Let’s hope whoever is in charge of the event allows it to go on this year as scheduled. But how many want to bet that the city fireworks – which are not done on July 4th – will be canceled? What will be the excuse? Maybe it’s too hot? You fill in the blanks!
