It is baffling to so many of us that such a great opportunity for some enterprising concern to revitalize the spot has not yet been seized. Several false starts have been made, and oftentimes thwarted by bureaucratic obstruction or opposition by certain concerned parties, rightly or wrongly.

“Last year, we fell short of our goal of making the MIAA tournament, but we are hoping to build on what we learned,” Somerville head coach Steve Walker said.

City of Somerville marks the 12th anniversary of September 11

911_vigilPlease join Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone for the 12th annual candlelight vigil honoring those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. The vigil will begin at the Cedar Street end of the Community Path at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, September 11, accompanied by Somerville Police and Somerville Fire Honor Guard. A short procession will lead into Davis Square, where a short speaking program and a moment of silence will take place. $50,000 will support ‘Storytellers as Placemakers Project’ fostering community ownership in Chuckie Harris Park and East Broadway Streetscape Project

East Somerville Main Streets and the Somerville Arts Council have been selected to received $50,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), along with Mudflat Pottery School and the City of Somerville. That funding through the NEA’s Our Town grant program will support a project designed to celebrate and preserve the community’s cultural identity and foster community ownership in two projects in East Somerville: Chuckie Harris Park and the East Broadway Streetscape Project.

Building facade collapses on Beacon Street in Somerville

Most of the facade at 296 – 298 Beacon St. collapsed around 10 a.m. Monday morning. The address is the home of Mixtura and Zoe’s Chinese restaurant. No injuries were reported. Inspectors are on the scene.
