Green-a-Thon combines fall cleanup with fundraising

Open space is a precious commodity in Somerville. But not every open area in the city is an oasis of natural beauty, and efforts to make Somerville a greener place are often held back by financial limitations. Groundwork Somerville, a local non-profit, recently set out to tackle both those problems in one day, with its first annual Green-a-thon, Saturday.

Shipley is the editor of the award-winning Connecticut Review, and the Connecticut State University Distinguished Professor at Southern Connecticut State University. I met her some years ago at a reading sponsored by the New England Poetry Club and we have stayed in touch.

To concerned neighbors,

On Halloween night, two trick-or-treaters were hit by a car. Both children were rushed to the hospital by ambulance. It is imperative that we do something before someone else is seriously injured. I hope this is a wake-up call for all of us.

Saint Clement cheerleaders win Hockomock Invitational

Saint Clement Parish School cheerleading squad won the Hockomock Invitational Cheerleading Championship. After many days of intense and dedicated practices, coach Heather Newell entered the cheerleading squad in the Hockomock Invitational at King Phillip High School. They competed in the Varsity level against 19 other schools. Led by the trio of junior captains Lordisha Paul, Cassandra Jules, and Sabrina Desir, the team was flawless and came back to Medford with a trophy to add to their many awards and accomplishments from previous years.

The Endicott College and Ibbetson Street Visiting Author series will continue Nov. 18 with the poets, (and Somerville Bagel Bards)  Miriam Levine and Bert Stern. The series directed by Ibbetson Street Press founder and Somerville News Arts Editor Doug Holder will be held at Endicott’s College’s Halle Library at 4 p.m. on Nov. 18. The series is open to the public, and will include an open mike after the features. Endicott College is located in Beverly, Mass. Free admission. Robbery suspect escaped police custody in Somerville

A Somerville man suspected of armed robbery attempted one last dash to freedom Friday as police detained him and waited for the alleged victim to identify him.

Spenser Bullock, 19, of 10 High St., took off running as a vehicle carrying the victim approached, police said. He allegedly ran from the bike path onto Winslow Avenue and into a yard where he scaled an eight foot fence.

Somerville High student publishes first novel

Mirta Stantic was so compelled to write her first novel that when an idea for a chapter or scenario came into her head, she skipped the school bus and ran home.

While it is not unusual for writers to obsessively work on their manuscripts, it is not every day that you find a 14-year-old girl juggling school, music, ballet, and a social life to hammer out a 200-page novel. And it is also not everyday that a teenager is a successful, published author.

Somerville football beats Cambridge behind Scarry performance

Joshua Scarry rushed for three touchdowns to lead the Highlanders to their third win of the season.

Joshua Scarry ran the living daylights out of the Cambridge Rindge and Latin football team.

Scarry rushed for 134 yards and three touchdowns and Devon Hairston also rushed for 102 yards and a pair of touchdowns as Somerville cruised to a 30-6 victory over the Falcons in Friday night’s Greater Boston League match-up.

“We ran the ball well and we were able to control the tempo of the game,” said coach Harry Marchetti. “We played a great game in all phases and our defense did a nice job controlling the line of scrimmage.”
