How “I” write a poem

On September 12, 2010, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

I am about to embark on another teaching adventure since being laid off from my job at McLean Hospital over a year ago. I will be teaching two creative writing classes at Endicott College. The class will start out with poetry writing, then move on to memoir and end in fiction. Since poetry heads the pack I have been thinking a lot about my writing process. I view myself primarily as a poet and journalist. I have had a fair share of poems published, edited the poetry magazine Ibbetson Street for 12 years, interviewed a slew of poets from the famous, infamous, to the obscure. Of course what works for me won’t necessarily work for you. Poetry is an art that deals with emotion and feeling—and that is the very stuff that can’t be pigeonholed into any scientific formulas.

Somerville Alibrandi’s capture title

On September 12, 2010, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

The Somerville Alibrandis recorded their 11th Yawkey League Championship in 14 years with a 4-1 series win over the West Roxbury Bluefish. The Bluefish were previously the two-time defending champions.

By Mike Rubin

For the Somerville Alibrandis, the victory was oh so sweet. Facing a 4-1 deficit, the Alibrandis stormed back for six unanswered runs en route to a 7-4 eight inning victory over the West Roxbury Bluefish in last Tuesday night’s match-up at Billings Field.

The Alibrandis, who captured the series by a 4-1 margin in the best of seven series, have captured their eleventh title in 14 years.

“It was just great baseball over the series,” said coach Rob McDonough. “The whole series, you couldn’t really ask for more exciting baseball. We were confident, and we played relaxed. We were able to come through with some close wins, and that really helped set the tone of the series.”

Remember Cabot Farms?

Cabot Farms sits on Broadway just before the block of stores that includes an Asian restaurant, a caterer’s headquarters, and the convenience store and Dunkin Donuts.

Outside is the rusty skeletal remains of what was once a colorful awning and entrance way. The facade of the building boasts of an era gone by, with colors very faded and fixtures in advanced decay. It sits beneath what looks like at least six rental units, as the building is huge. In real estate terms it is known as a gold mine. The family that has owned it for decades still owns it as far as I know. A couple of  years ago when I spoke to the owner’s son, (a well known local musician back in the 70’s who is around my age), they still owned it.

Today we opened the doors on a new school year. After a long, hot summer it’s good to see the students returning to school. One of the best parts of having the high school right next door to City Hall is it serves as a consistent reminder of why municipal government matters. Our children deserve to live in a safe, clean, healthy, vibrant community where they can get the best possible education we can give them. When we deliver on that, it helps move the entire city forward.
