It’s a Walsh, Walsh World

Fans of the Walsh Brothers, who will perform this weekend at Jimmy Tingle’s Off-Broadway Theater (Friday 7 p.m., Saturday 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., tickets $15, $7 students go to jtoffbroadway.com for more info or call the box office at 617-691-1616.), should hold out hope that someone taped their first performance together. From the way they tell it, it seemed to have all the elements of a classic Walsh Brothers routine: props, characters, a surreal setting, and sensitive subject matter. The only problem was, it also had the Mayor of Boston hiding his head under his table.

Talking with Somerville poet/musician Dick Lourie

On March 17, 2005, in Uncategorized, by The News Staff

Somerville has been described as the “Paris of New England,” and no wonder; in this often overlooked city that looms in the shadow of Boston and Cambridge, lies a rich mother lode of artists, poets and writers.
One of the artistic denizens of our beloved burg is poet/musician Dick Lourie. Lourie has been an editor for the small press “Hanging Loose.”
The press, founded in 1966, publishes “Hanging Loose” magazine, and individual collections of poetry. “Hanging Loose” is one of the oldest continually running small literary presses in the country.
It specializes in bringing new writer’s work to the surface. They have published books by such writers as: Sherman Alexie and Dennis Nurske, and continue to maintain relationships with writers they published more than 30 years ago.
Lourie is an accomplished poet in his own right.
He has published a number of collections of his own poetry, and in 2000 released a CD “Ghost Radio Blues” that mixes spoken word, with the Blues. His work has been in such magazines as: “Verse,” “Exquisite Corpse,” “Massachusetts Review,” and others.
He has edited two anthologies of high school writers with the “Hanging Loose Press,” and has worked extensively with students and teachers in poetry programs.
Lourie also excels in the medium of music.
He plays tenor sax and trumpet with a 50’s rock ‘n’ roll band as well as a “Doo-Wop” group.
He is retired from the University of Massachusetts at Boston, where he worked as an editor. Dh_dicklourie

A Question of Power: The Appointment versus Civil Service debate

The Somerville News reported March 2 that Mayor Joseph A Curtatone had submitted a home rule petition to the Board of Aldermen that would remove the office of police chief from civil service and make it an appointed position.  Mayor Curtatone cited accountability as the rationale for submitting the request.Santos

The Mayor argued a chief needs to be held to the same performance standards as everyone else and a chief needs to know he or she can be removed if those standards are not met.

Among the questions that will be put to the board of aldermen will be: how much power should the mayor have to remove the police chief?

The rumor around Ward 5 is that John L. Sullivan, former aide to Tony LaFuente’s campaign, is considering a run for Ward Alderman against Sean O’Donovan.  We also hear that there may be a third candidate in that race – making a Primary in Ward 5.  Guess they plan on keeping Sean very busy this year and on his toes – not sleeping on the job.

It would be nice, after all, to be able to reach Alderman O’Donovan other then at the 305 area code where he seems to be spending a lot of time lately – by the way, nice tan Sean.

Another rumor we recently heard was that on the statewide political scene – a name that keeps popping up is former Mayor Dorothy Kelly Gay.  She is supposedly considering a run for Secretary of State.  Close Newstalk insiders say she’s looking at the possibilities, especially if Bill Galvin, the present Secretary of State, is going to run for Governor.
