Joshua Scarry has emerged as the leading rusher for the Highlanders, rushing for close to 1,000 yards on the season.

For the Somerville High football team, the 3-6 record is deceiving. Despite suffering two two-game losing streaks, the Highlanders also endured one of the toughest schedules in the state, having faced five top 20 schools in just nine games.

“We were battle tested, and we faced the toughest teams,” said coach Harry Marchetti earlier in the season. “Our record is deceiving because of our schedule. The kids played some of the best teams in the state, and I thought we were able to put up a good fight.”

In the season opener against Greater Lawrence, the Highlanders coasted to a 28-0 victory. Leading the way was quarterback Rob Pratt, who completed six passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns while running back Joshua Scarry also rushed for a pair of scores.

Since then, Somerville lost to Falmouth, Malden Catholic and top ranked Xaverian before beating Medford 35-8.

The Highlanders then lost to St. John’s Prep, Malden and Everett. They bounced back with a 30 to 8 win over Cambridge behind a three touchdown performance by Scarry. “We’re hoping we can carry some momentum into the Thanksgiving Day game against (Matignon),’’ said Marchetti. “We’re hoping we can really step it up and finish out the season in style.”
