Infrastructure upgrades are in design for portions of Highland Ave., Summer St., Central St., and School St.

Streetscape improvements are planned for Somerville’s Spring Hill neighborhood as part of the Spring Hill Sewer Separation project. Construction is expected to begin in 2021, but the City is now accepting community feedback to inform design.

The Spring Hill Sewer Separation project will separate stormwater flow from the existing combined sewers to mitigate flooding and reduce waterway pollution, install green stormwater infrastructure, enhance the tree canopy, and improve street design to better serve pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders, and motorists. Streetscape improvements will be installed toward the end of the project, after underground utility upgrades have been completed.

During this preliminary design phase, the City is accepting feedback about corridors in Phase 1 of the project, which includes the following:

  • Highland Ave. (Central St. to McGrath Hwy)
  • Summer St. (Belmont St. to Bow St.)
  • Central St. (Highland Ave. to Somerville Ave.)
  • School St. (Highland Ave. to Somerville Ave.)

To share your thoughts about these roadways, complete this brief survey by March 20, 2020.

  1. Lee Ann Walsh says:

Put all utility wires underground while having the street open to separate sewer and storm water.
