Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone announced today that Massachusetts Governor Deval L. Patrick has declared Monday, March 8th to be "Somerville All America City Day," and will visit the City of Somerville on Monday, March 8th for a ceremony in honor of the City's All America City status, and to discuss the importance of civic engagement with Somerville High School students. "All America City Day" will also honor the City's recent national recognition for Shape Up Somerville, the USDA's Healthier U.S. Schools Challenge, and innovative development projects. The event will be held at the Somerville High School's Centennial Auditorium, located at 81 Highland Ave., beginning at 9:30 a.m.

"Somerville has a history of being at the forefront of innovative technologies and programs, but recognition based on civic engagement and the work of the entire community is perhaps one of the most important awards we could have received," Mayor Curtatone said. "We would not be an All America City if not for the work of our residents, businesses, organizations, and all community members to make this City a better place to live, work, play and raise a family. I'm extremely proud of what we've accomplished, and eager to continue our work. I thank Governor Patrick for his ongoing support, and for helping us celebrate, once more."

The City of Somerville was named an All America City in July 2009 by the National Civic League. The All America City Award is America's original community recognition award, honoring communities of all sizes where community members, government, businesses and nonprofit organizations work together to address critical local issues.

The City of Somerville and Somerville Public Schools also gained national attention recently for its Shape Up Somerville and healthy schools initiatives. During the official launch of her national "Let's Move" initiative, First Lady Michelle Obama lauded Somerville's program. Additionally, four of Somerville's eight elementary schools were recently presented with awards in the USDA's Healthier US Schools Challenge.

"The Governor's upcoming visit is a wonderful opportunity to again bring the community together, particularly Somerville's hard working student body, to highlight the importance of civic engagement, and truly becoming involved in the community," Mayor Curtatone said. "Our students have already given so much to the City of Somerville as a whole, and I'm certain that reinforcement and encouragement from leaders like Governor Patrick will serve as a further reminder of how important and successful their support will be to the future of Somerville."
