Joshua Scarry ran the living daylights out of the Cambridge Rindge and Latin football team.

Scarry rushed for 134 yards and three touchdowns and Devon Hairston also rushed for 102 yards and a pair of touchdowns as Somerville cruised to a 30-6 victory over the Falcons in Friday night’s Greater Boston League match-up.

“We ran the ball well and we were able to control the tempo of the game,” said coach Harry Marchetti. “We played a great game in all phases and our defense did a nice job controlling the line of scrimmage.”

With the win, Somerville improved to 3-6 overall and will now prepare for their season ending match-up in a Thanksgiving Day showdown against Matignon.

Midway through the first quarter, Somerville grabbed a 6-0 lead as Scarry capped off a seven play drive. Off a screen to the right side, Scarry dashed into the end zone.

It stayed that way until early in the second quarter as Hairston increased the lead to 12-0. On a five play drive, Somerville backs continued to slash through several defenders into the red zone.

Positioned at the Falcon seven yard line, Hairston dodged through several tacklers at the line of scrimmage and broke free into the end zone.

With a 12-0 lead, the Highlanders might have dominated the contest, but didn’t secure the victory until late in the third quarter.

Kicking off the second half, Somerville engineered a quick four play 72-yard scoring drive. After several rushes, Somerville advanced to midfield before Scarry executed a nifty 50-yard touchdown run. Dodging through several tacklers, Scarry dashed down the middle of the field and landed in the end zone en route to an 18-0 lead.

Averting the shutout, Cambridge closed the gap within 18-6 as Derek Pizzaro spotted an open Desmon Velez in the back of the end zone. Following a successful conversion pass from Pizzaro to Jordan Thomas, Cambridge cut the lead to 10 (18-8).

On the ensuing drive, the Highlanders slashed through the Falcons’ run defense and quickly drove within the red zone. Positioned at the Falcon 5-yard line, Scarry recorded his third touchdown of the night, on a scamper on the far right side.

Capping the scoring, Somerville increased the lead on Hairston’s 85-yard touchdown run.

Pinned at their own 15-yard line, Somerville quickly increased the lead to 30-8 as Hairston reversed a cut behind the line of scrimmage, and dashed down the right side of the field and into the end zone midway through the fourth quarter.
