A big get well wish goes out to Somerville Police Officer Mario Oliveira who was shot in the line of duty last week. We hear Mario is up and recovering and getting back to his old self. Knowing Mario, he’ll be eager to return to the job but we hope he takes his time and focuses on his recovery. Mario is a very well known police officer here in Somerville and there are a lot of people in this city he has helped get through traumatic and frightening events. Keep working on your recovery Mario, we know you’re determined to come back stronger than ever.

Growndworks Somerville is holding a Greenathon on November 13. They will be collecting trash and leaves in four Somerville spaces to create an even more beautiful city. Community members are asked to meet at 10 a.m. at one of the following locations: Zero New Washington Street, Somerville Junction Park at Central Street and the Commuter Rail bridge; and the parking lot behind the High School on School Street and in West Somerville at the intersection of Broadway and Alewife Brook Parkway.
Modeled after the typical “walk-a-thon” style fundraiser, Groundworks Somerville will be accepting pledges for each hour spent “greening the city.” They are accepting both pledges and participants. All proceeds will help fund healthy education, green jobs, and sustainable community programming at GWS. You can sponsor any GWS participant for each hour worked, or you can donate a set amount.
