The Mayor's Fitness Challenge will incorporate both a team competition, as well as a non-competitive "Lifestyle Pledge," with participants pledging to improve their health by exercising more and eating better. Individuals who enroll in the Team Challenge will compete against other teams by earning points for individual weight loss and changes in their Body Mass Index (BMI). All participants will earn a Shape Up Somerville Fitness Buck, which is redeemable at many locations throughout the City, such as local gyms and exercise studios, markets, and participating restaurants.
The health and wellness fair will include showcases and events including: Salsa dancing; Yoga; Indoor Farmers' Markets; Businesses, and other Recreation Department programming for children and adults of all ages. Throughout the program participants will be issued "Fitness Kits" consisting of pedometers, walking/jogging lights, walking maps, and more.
