Less than a month away, it’s the Third East Somerville Reunion, set for Saturday, June 15, at the Somerville City Club, across from Holiday Inn on Innerbelt Road. Thanks to hard work and efforts put into this by Dan Rogovich and his small but dedicated bunch of helpers, it should be a great one once again for one and all. The last time was two years ago and well over 100 to 150 attendees showed up from all over the state and across the country. Lots of people who grew up in East Somerville have missed the last two but wanted to have a third. Some of us here at The Somerville Times are from East Somerville we will be there and have already reached out to others. A small group of “down backers” behind the Bucket who grew up there in the 60’s will all be there. They meet every four or so months to talk about old times and great times. Help make this a success. Go online to Facebook to check it out. Ask Dan what you can do to help. He is looking for the food, entertainment and just plain East Somerville fun.

Celebrating their birthdays this week: Happy birthday to one of Somerville’s all-knowing political pundits, Mr. Feargal O’Toole. A great guy, we wish him the very best on this his birthday. Happy birthday to an old friend to everyone here in Somerville from East to Winter Hill and beyond, Vinny (Clue) Vicente. What a Somerville institution he is. Happy birthday to local Winter Hill resident Brian Roche, who is one of Boston’s top chefs. Happy birthday to Jim D’Amico of the C21 North East offices, soon to be 50. We wish Jim a happy birthday. Happy birthday to Scott Diamond, who grew up in West Somerville. A nice guy, we hope he has a great birthday as well. To those that are celebrating this week, and we didn’t post, again we wish you the best of birthdays.

Are you fed up yet on the construction and downed bridges in this small city? It’s happening all at once, and it seems to be for not just a few weeks or months but mostly for a year. Somerville is not quite 4-square miles, with a population of 78K to 80K. Bridges from East to West are down and they are telling us up to one year. So far the only councilor who we see and hear is trying to do things to help is Mark Niedergang of Ward 5. He seems to be on top of every-thing. It’s election year, and people are beginning to get peed-off. If there ever was a time to defeat an incumbent this is the year, don’t you think? Our sources tell us the city is approaching $600M in debt. Just wait for your single family tax coming to $20k.

The Committee to Elect Mary Marshall for Ward 3 School Committee is hosting her campaign kickoff fundraiser Wednesday, June 5, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at The Neighborhood Restaurant in Union Square. All are welcome to attend. You can find out more about Mary’s campaign platform by going to her website: MaryVMarshall.com.

If any candidate is having a fundraiser or campaign kickoff let us know and we will add it to Newstalk. Good luck to all that pulled out papers to run for office. There is still time to go online to and check out who is running for what office at www.somervillema.gov. We need more candidates.

On Thursday, May 23, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission will hold its Conservation Project Talk and Tour of the Milk Row Cemetery. Barbara Mangum, Objects Conservator and President of the Somerville Museum, dressed in period clothing, will highlight the work her firm recently completed with the city’s Community Preservation Act (CPA) funds. Many markers and the Civil War monument were repaired, cleaned and reset in this compact burial ground. Founded in 1804 by Samuel Tufts, it sits on farmland that was once part of Charlestown. Light refreshments have been donated by Market Basket, a “Friend of the Cemetery.” Meet at the front gate at 439 Somerville Avenue. Heavy rain cancels the event.
