State and local police, as well as FBI personnel, are searching for a  suspect who reportedly fired gunshots while engaged in an attempted robbery at Middlesex Federal Savings in Somerville. Authorities are urging area residents to stay indoors and exercise caution as the search for the suspect continues.

The robbery took place at 9:57 a.m. on Wednesday. Witnesses said that the suspect fired a shot in the air as he entered the bank and later shot at a police officer who engaged the suspect. The officer was uninjured, according to police, and the suspect immediately fled the scene on foot.

It was reported that a suspect was taken into custody shortly after the incident, but the individual was cleared by police and released. The Davis Square area was closed off for approximately an hour while police searched for the suspect. An intense search of the area, including surrounding residences, was conducted by police in response to the incident.

Mayor Curtatone and Police Chief Fallon were on the scene and spoke to the media, confirming that the search is still underway for the suspect. A backpack believed to be left behind by the suspect was located and, according to reports, contained a firearm.

According to the city’s Community Alert System, the suspect is considered armed and dangerous and is described as a roughly 20-35-year-old light skinned male, approximately 5 ft 5 in. tall, and 175 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black stocking hat, camouflage jacket, blue jeans and black sneakers. Photos are available at www.somervillema.gov. Another person of interest has been detained and is cooperating with police.

Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact the Somerville Police Department at 617-625-1600 ext. 7220 (during business hours) or ext. 7254 (24/7). Tips may be left anonymously through text. Begin your text message with 617spd and send it to TIP411 (847411).

Further details will be reported as they are made available.

If it turns out that he’s an illegal, will our councilors and mayor setup a defense fund for him? Just asking.

  2. Bosco says:

If he is illegal will the judge give him low bail, order the ice agent out of the courtroom, then let him slither out the back door. As I have said many times If I’m ever in a jam at the Somerville court house, I just want to be treated like an illegal alien!!! Thanks Joe and Marty.

You gotta laugh, if not cry, over the nitwits going off about the “illegals” every time a hispanic person is in trouble. There’s not the least whiff of an indication that this guy is undocumented, and yet…

    Shows their true colors.

  4. Casimir H. Prohosky Jr. says:

Amen to that. So sick of all this racism in what was once our America. Enough already.

  5. Yet another poster says:

Funny how ignorant folk slip “as I have said many times…” into their rants so freely, as if that somehow makes their point more forceful. Not unlike trump, with his mindless “so true…” self-affirmations. Makes you sound more like a crazy person at a bus stop.

Note to racists: you’re not smart enough to use sarcasm. Just don’t try.

Having initiated this thread and seeing it somehow take a turn towards someone declaring my statement as being racist I feel the need to defend myself. I’ve long held the belief that the first person to claim racism on a non-racism related topic is generally the racist. The persons who made the charge are also making assumptions with regard to my race and my views on race. I’ll take the high road and leave it as that.

My statement did not make any reference to race. It instead was directed at criticizing the decision by our elected local officials to selectively decide which federal laws they will support and which laws they’ll work to selectively prevent the police from supporting.

That’s it. Nothing more and nothing less.

No need bothering with defending yourself. Everyone knows what you are.
