Luis Angel Lopez.

A 20-year-old Somerville man was arrested early this morning after shots were fired at two Somerville Housing Authority Police Officers.  Luis Angel Lopez, age 20, was arrested after a police SWAT team surrounded his house at 37 Jacques Street.

Shortly before 10:30 last evening, two Somerville Housing Authority Police Officers were on patrol on Temple Street near the Mystic Housing Development.  They heard two gunshots from the area of Temple and Jacques Street and saw a group of individuals running from the area.  One male subject began walking from the area on Jacques Street and attracted the attention of the officers.

The Housing Officers drove down Jacques Street, identified themselves as police officers and ordered him to stop.  As one officer stepped out of his unmarked cruiser, the suspect turned and fired one shot at the officer, the bullet striking the driver’s side door of his unmarked cruiser.  The suspect then fled to 37 Jacques Street.

The house was quickly secured by Somerville Police officers and neighboring homes were evacuated as a precaution.  A SWAT team and Negotiators from the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council were called in to assist.  They found the suspect hiding in a first floor bedroom where he was arrested without incident at about 1:30 a.m.

The investigation is continuing.  Lopez will be arraigned in Somerville District Court this morning.
