The publishers, staff and all associated with The Somerville Times wish everyone a very Happy Holiday, Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah, as well as a prosperous and healthy New Year in 2019.

The Somerville Times staff is taking a small holiday vacation beginning this week, with the next issue coming out on January 2, 2019. Anything that comes in and is Somerville related through our vacation period will be posted online to our website. We want to thank all our readers and fans for your support this past year. We are very proud of our paper. It’s what a real local paper should be, local stories that are about Somerville. We leave the big city stuff up to The Herald, Weekly Dig and Gatehouse and – oh yes – The Globe. Again, thank you! Don’t forget, you can go online to our website and register online for a free subscription of the entire paper. In just a short period of time we have had several hundred already sign up. When something breaks in the city, you’ll get it on the online subscription.

Happy birthday for the next two weeks while we are on vacation: Happy birthday to a good friend and former Somerville resident Ron Lakerveld, who now resides in NC. A great guy, we wish him the very best. Our good friend Zachary Atwell is celebrating this week as well. Happy birthday also to Jim Henry, a well-known man in Somerville and the Boston area. A great guy as well. Happy birthday to Winter Hill’s Jamie Sue O’Leary. We wish her a great day as well. Happy birthday to former East Somerville guy (down back) Jack Basset. We wish him a great day as well. Happy birthday to another East Somerville guy who grew up here, Paul Peddle, who is now a realtor in Southern NH at Better Home in Londonderry. Happy birthday to Kristen Marie Butler as well. We hope she has a great day. Big time happy birthday to one of the nicest elected officials in our city, Maria Curtatone, who is the Register of Deeds for Middlesex County. We hope she has a great day on her birthday. Happy birthday to everyone here and from the city who is celebrating this week. We wish every one of them a very happy birthday.

Our sincere condolences go out to the Sillari family with the recent passing of Mary Sillari. The matriarch of one of Somerville’s finest families, which have done so much for the city over the years, will be missed. All of Mary Sillari’s family and many friends, as well as the acquaintances she has touched over the years, will have great stories to remember and tell.

Someone is passing around to various city officials and Board members an anonymous letter regarding one of our aldermen. We don’t know if it’s true or not, but we won’t print it because the person writing it won’t give his or her name.
*********************
Miss watching the Board of Aldermen meetings on TV? You can view them in their entirety on Comcast channel 22, as well as on YouTube. Watch your city at work and see how these dedicated members of our community are serving you, the public. We can’t say this enough, watch the meetings on either cable broadcast live, or go online to YouTube to watch them. You will find some pretty hysterical information there about what’s happening in the city. This should be required viewing for everyone who cares about what is happening here. Even the committee meetings are online. After all, the Board of Aldermen is voting to spend your money. Wow, the raises some department heads are getting. Ask yourself, if you own property has your taxes gone down or stayed the same over the past 14 years? And do you remember what they kept telling us what the benefit of Assembly Square would be to our tax base? Don’t let a small minority of a certain group run our city, be aware of what is going on, and VOTE.

It’s official. A new Century 21 will be opened here in Somerville! Since 1975, Somerville has always had a C21. And now Century 21 North East – The Norton Group will be officially launched over the course of the next couple of weeks. Both Jim D’Amico of C21 North East and Donald and Patricia Norton of The Norton Group are very pleased to form this new partnership. Donald and Pat Norton have been brokers since 1977, practicing real estate here in Somerville and the Greater Boston area, and Jim D’Amico has been practicing since early 1990’s in the Chelsea-North Shore area. Together, the partnership is going to continue and make this new company well known here in the city. More information will be announced the first week of January.

Don’t forget to park on the EVEN side of the street once they call a snow emergency. And no, you can’t park in the school yards anymore, they put gates on them. Let’s hope the city doesn’t call for snow emergencies unless it’s a real emergency like a blizzard.

So some bloggers tried to say that bicycles pay taxes through other forms of taxes like property taxes. We would like to remind them that everyone pays property taxes, either directly or indirectly. But those that own automobiles pay an additional tax called the excise tax, which is for street and road improvements. Bicycles owners should pay a tax as well, just to be fair about it. After all, it costs money to paint those lanes and to shorten the streets.

The Somerville City Club’s manager, Donny Johnson, is looking all the time for new members to join the club. If you think you’d be interested give him a call 617-623-9340. It’s a great local club for the residents of Somerville. It’s been around now for over 40 years at their location on Innerbelt Road, across from the Holiday Inn. It has plenty of parking and has a very nice hall for rent. Some say the best deal in Somerville. Call the hall and ask for details: 617-623-9340. The Somerville City Club supports a lot of local charitable groups and organizations here in Somerville.
