Our poet this week writes to The Times: “I am Kuoya Dut. I am a junior finance major at Endicott college. I was born in South Sudan and raised and educated in Kenya. I am passionate about writing and fashion design. My hobbies include running, hiking, soccer and playing pool. I have hosted a radio show in the past too.”
THE OCEAN
Is it the rolling fog? looking like
a giant grey ball, is it the deep
Blue crashing waves? is it the red
Shells washed ashore? I can’t seem
to leave.
My feet are drawn to the huge rocks
like a bewitching lover, my gaze is hooked
on the milky shore, what a beauty the
ocean is, I can’t seem to leave
My mind is clear like a transparent glass
because of the view before me, My
Heart swirls in a mixture of joy
And bewilderment, I can’t seem to leave.
— Kuoya Dut
