Just about all of us have been lamenting the seemingly out of control loss of trees in the city in recent months.
Some explanations for this have been offered, but it doesn’t compensate for that feeling of loss when we stroll down the street and notice all those empty spaces where once stood familiar old friends, some whom we have known since childhood.
Well, the good news is the City of Somerville’s Urban Forestry Division and the Mystic River Watershed Association has organized a series of community planting events in in East Somerville and Ten Hills taking place this week and next.
On Wednesday, November 14, the tree planting event will take place in the Ten Hills neighborhood, beginning at 10:00 a.m. and running until approximately 1:00 p.m., followed by a pizza lunch. Meet at the Blessing of the Bay parking lot., 32 Shore Dr. 20 volunteers are needed for the event.
On Thursday, November 15, it’s Pennsylvania Avenue’s turn. Same time, pizza lunch. 20 volunteers are needed.
On Monday, November 19, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., you can join in for the final tree planting event at Foss Park. Meet on the Fellsway West side of the park. 15 volunteers are being requested for this planting. Pizza here too.
Advance registration is required, so go to https://www.somervillema.gov/events/2018/11/14/mrwa-community-planting-event for registration info.
It’s a great way to help bring back a little greenery to the city, and we could all use some of that!
This is great, but Somerville needs a more aggressive plan. Why didn’t the Mayor and Aldermen do something while all the trees were cut down or left to die from neglect. Somerville needs to plant hundreds if not thousands of trees to make up for the number lost in the last year alone. We need to demand more or our neighborhoods and parks will turn into deserts.
