Newstalk for April 7

On April 7, 2010, in Uncategorized, by The News Staff

Monday was the fifth anniversary of Senator Charlie Shannon's passing, hardly seems possible — seems like yesterday. Charlie was a great guy, well liked by many here in Somerville and liked by many sides of the Political isle as well. It was very nice that Senator Pat Jehlen made a motion Monday in the Senate chambers to suspend the business in memory of Senator Shannon.

There have been many good deeds by Somerville people in these hard economic times. But the folks at Amelia's Kitchen in Teele Square deserve special recognition: they returned a lost credit card to its relieved owner, Ann, who was very pleased and thankful for the honesty.

Election for the special Senate seat is next Tuesday, April 13. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Only Ward 1 precinct 1 and Ward 2 precinct 1 here in Somerville are in the district but there are a lot of signs down there in East Somerville for this race. Our best to Sal DiDominico who has worked very hard and of course Mike Albano who grew up in the district and lives now in Chelsea. Six candidates going for this seat with three from Cambridge.

Speaking of elections we hear rumblings for the Governors Councilors seat presently held by Michael Callahan who is not running for re-election. This is a crazy district which is spread out over some of the most unlikely places, so expect some names coming out on this one. Last time this seat was opened quite a few candidates jumped at this job, we expect someone from Somerville to jump in as well this time.

Still time to get some candidates for all our local state representatives' seats. Anyone choosing to run for the State Representative or Senate seat has to pull papers in town at the Secretary of States office. You have 150 signatures for state representative and 300 for senate and turned in to the local Election Department by April 27. So there is still time for someone to jump in the races, competition is great and opens up debate, remember our elected officials work for the people not for themselves, hopefully some candidates will come out. We hear that Congressman Mike Capuano might get a last minute opponent from Boston. We know one independent candidate for State representative against Carl, who is from Medford. If nothing else no matter what side of the fence you're on, the election of Scott Brown as US senator was a wake up call for all those elected officials that take for granted the majority – independent, non-partisan citizens who simply want government to work for everyone, not just the elite or well connected.

Save the date: Register of Deeds and Former Mayor Gene Brune is having his annual Scholarship Breakfast this month…coming up May 9 Anthony's in Malden.

Spring is here and soon summer…the way the weather changes around here… the local YMCA on Highland has a great workout room to help you slim down for those sunny beach days, and the prices are more then reasonable.

***************

Don't forget about the Somerville High Scholarship Foundation annual fundraiser, $100 for the chance to win $10,000 and a whole lot of other prizes as well.

Happy Birthday to one of our biggest fans (yes contrary to the PDS crowd we have fans) Donna Casey from Cobble Hill, both her and her son John are huge fans, we wish her the best and many more happy birthdays.

We hear through the grapevine, that the Police Department recently let go one of there own for just cause. This is something that doesn't happen that often and thank goodness. It was done very quietly which to some might be good; there were many factors that lead up to his dismissal, we heard.

What's with the guy who recently purchased a home on Thorndike Street and feels as though he can do whatever he wants? This past weekend he was caught tearing off the asbestos siding without a permit. Not very safe. He just bought into the neighborhood but felt like he could throw up ladders in neighbor's yards and do whatever he wants. At least until the building inspector arrived many hours later when the joker was almost done. Don't you know: Tuesday morning 7:30 a.m. This guy's out there tearing it off again….
