By Mike Rubin

Led by several solid efforts, the Somerville High School Volleyball team finished the week with a 1-1 mark.

After suffering a 3-2 defeat to Medford last Wednesday, the Highlanders battled to a 3-2 victory over Everett on Friday. As a result, the Highlanders now stand at 2-8 overall.

In the Medford loss, the Highlanders were led by Tatiana Rivera, who recorded a multitude of service points while Lorenza Etienne, Nicole Genard and Jacqueline Homsi fared solid in the back row.

Defensively, Stephanie Gullage and Zhanea Nicholson emerged with some solid digs.

“The girls played well but we had a number of serving and receiving errors that cost us the game,” said coach Lauren Poussard.”

In Friday’s 3-2 win over Everett, solid serving efforts were led by Riveira and Brittany Cassidy, who recorded several key blocks. Genard also rose to the occasion, recording 12 kills, four blocks and 15 digs.

“The girls are playing well as a team together,” said Poussard. “They’re stepping it up and are rising to the occasion. We’re improving as the season progresses, and we’re hoping to see some improvements down the stretch towards the end of the season.”

The Highlanders faced off against Malden on Monday.
