Everett City Councilor Sal DiDomenico is telling supporters he won today's special
Democratic primary election as the early second place finisher Tim Flaherty is calling for
a recount.

Flaherty alleged voting irregularities in Everett after an election day tally left him about 125 votes short, according to early returns.

"The unofficial vote tally tonight shows a margin of just over 100 votes separating myself and Sal DiDomenico. This race is simply too close to call. The essence of democracy is that every vote must count," said Flaherty in an e-mailed statement Tuesday night. "Throughout the day, we've seen evidence of voting irregularities in Everett. We are therefore calling for a recount and an investigation into these irregularities."

DiDomeinco could not immediately be reached before The Somerville News deadline Tuesday night.

The seat's district includes two precincts in Somerville in Ward 1 and Ward 2 and portions of Middlesex, Suffolk and Essex counties.

Flaherty, a Cambridge lawyer, faced two other Cambridge candidates in the six-way Democratic primary: former Cambridge mayor Denise Simmons and attorney Dennis Benzan.

DiDomenico worked as chief of staff in Galluccio's senate office before Galluccio was sentenced to one year in jail for drinking alcohol while on probation for leaving the scene of a car crash.

DiDomeinco will not have a Republican opponent.
